When metabolic processes occur inside the body, energy is released during chewing food and physical activity. If the amount of energy consumed from food exceeds the body's needs, it is stored as body fat.

The recommended daily caloric intake for adults is approximately 2,700 kcal for men and 2,000 kcal for women. Assuming three meals a day, this amounts to about 900 kcal for men and 667 kcal for women.
