'Heavy rain begins' no casualties or facility damage... 52 flights canceled

On the 29th, when heavy rain warnings were issued for the Jeolla, Chungcheong, and Gyeongsang regions and the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (Central Disaster Management Headquarters) Phase 1 was activated, 52 flights were canceled and various areas, including national parks, were restricted.

According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety on the 29th, as of 5 p.m., the Level 1 response of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters has been activated, and the heavy rain crisis alert level has been raised from 'Attention' to 'Caution.' As of 6 p.m., there are no reports of casualties or damage to facilities.

However, 52 flights were canceled due to strong winds and other factors. Gimpo had 10 cancellations, Gimhae 32, Jeju 17, Ulsan 2, Gwangju 1, Yeosu 1, and Sacheon 1.

To prevent damage, access has been restricted at key facilities throughout the area. A total of 168 sections across five national parks, including Mudeungsan, as well as 117 locations such as local government riverbank parking lots, riverside areas, camping sites, and coastlines, are currently under control.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, due to the influence of low pressure and stationary fronts, heavy rainfall is expected from this day until tomorrow in the Seoul metropolitan area with 30 to 100 mm (more than 120 mm in some areas), Gangwon Province with 30 to 100 mm (more than 120 mm in some areas), and Chungcheong Province with 50 to 100 mm (more than 120 mm in some areas).

The Jeolla region received 50 to 100 mm (more than 150 mm in many areas), the Gyeongsang region 30 to 80 mm (more than 100 mm in many areas), and Jeju Island 30 to 80 mm (more than 120 mm in many areas).

On this day, the head of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, Minister Lee Sang-min of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, issued instructions urging the vulnerable groups residing in underground spaces such as semi-basement houses at risk of flooding to evacuate in advance to prevent casualties caused by the heavy rain.

The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters plans to continuously monitor weather conditions and thoroughly manage safety by checking damage situations, among other measures.
