The number of medical school admissions nationwide for the 2025 academic year has been confirmed to increase by 1,540 from the previous year, totaling 4,695 students. This figure includes the 4,565 students admitted through the regular medical school recruitment and additional quota-based admissions such as the rural and fishing village student selection. The recruitment number for regional talent programs at 26 non-metropolitan medical schools has been set at 1,913 students, an increase of 888 from the previous year.
Next year's medical school quota confirmed at 4,695 students... 1,913 will be recruited as local talent
According to the '2025 Academic Year College Admission Policy Implementation Plan' announced by the Ministry of Education on the 30th, 26 universities outside the Seoul metropolitan area will select 3,202 students, with 1,549 (81%) through the early admission process for local talent and 364 (19%) through the regular admission process. This year, students who have attended high schools with medical schools in their region for three years are eligible to apply for the regional talent medical school admission process.
Chonnam National University selected 130 out of 165 applicants (78.8%) as local talent, the highest number among all universities nationwide. Since there is no medical school in Jeonnam, Chonnam National University in Gwangju Metropolitan City aims to recruit many students through the local talent admission track to expand the medical workforce needed in the region.
There are six medical schools that select over 100 local talents, including Chonnam National University. They are Pusan National University with 113 students (69.3% of the total), Jeonbuk National University with 111 students (64.9%), Gyeongsang National University with 103 students (72.5%), Wonkwang University with 102 students (65%), and Chosun University with 100 students (65.8%).
Medical schools in the Gangwon region relatively select fewer local students. Hanlim University admits 22 students (21.2% of the total), Yonsei University (Mirae Campus) 30 students (28.8%), and Catholic Kwandong University 40 students (34.8%). Since the student population in Gangwon is small, it appears they judged that suddenly increasing the number of local students would make it difficult to secure high-quality students. However, Gangwon National University, a public university, decided to admit 55 students, which is 60.4% of the total, in accordance with the government-recommended local talent selection ratio of 60%.
Looking at it by region, the medical schools in Chungnam, Chungbuk, and Daejeon, which selected 174 local talents last year, plan to select 464 this year, making the largest increase in local talent recruitment. It is expected that the threshold for students from the Chungcheong region to enter medical schools will significantly lower compared to last year. In Daegu and Gyeongbuk, the number increased from 174 to 357; in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam, from 295 to 467; in Gwangju and Jeonbuk, from 303 to 443; in Gangwon, from 63 to 147; and in Jeju Island, from 20 to 35, with the number of local talents being recruited increasing in each region.
Meanwhile, on this day, Gyeongbuk National University announced the revision of the medical school expansion regulation, which had been rejected twice during the review process due to faculty opposition. The final step, the University Council, was scheduled to be held on the 31st, but as it was likely to be rejected, the president decided to simply promulgate the regulation revision. With this, Gyeongbuk National University promulgated the regulation revision, and out of the 32 universities with expanded medical schools, 27 had completed their regulation revisions.
