Sudden summer... Today in Seoul, the morning was the hottest among all May records.

On the 21st, the dayโ€™s minimum temperatures in Seoul, Incheon, and other metropolitan areas, as well as parts of Gangwon and Yeongnam, were recorded as the highest ever for May, due to abundant sunshine and the growth of all living things during the Xiaoman (Small Full) period. The early heat caused by southerly winds and fog is expected to continue until the next day.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, as of 9:40 a.m., the daily minimum temperatures in Seoul, Incheon, Gangwon, and some parts of Yeongnam on this day were the highest ever recorded for May. In particular, Seoul's minimum temperature on this day was 23ยฐC, surpassing the previous record set in October 1907. The previous highest record was 21.8ยฐC, set during the extreme heatwave of 2018.

Including Seoul, a total of 11 regions broke the record for the lowest temperature in May. Among them, Pohang in Gyeongbuk maintained a temperature of 25ยฐC or higher until 11:30 PM the previous day, then dropped to 23.8ยฐC in the morning, narrowly avoiding a tropical night in May. A tropical night is a phenomenon where the temperature does not fall below 25ยฐC from 6:01 PM to 9:00 AM the next day.

The background of the heatwave in May is analyzed by the Korea Meteorological Administration as being caused by warm and humid winds, dense fog, and a warming effect. A warm south wind filled with moisture, driven by a mobile high-pressure system located east of Japan, blew into the country, causing temperatures on the previous day and today to be about 2 to 7 degrees higher than the normal (minimum temperature 10-15ยฐC, maximum temperature 22-27ยฐC). The minimum temperature on the morning of the 21st was forecasted to be between 13 and 21ยฐC, and the maximum temperature during the day between 17 and 28ยฐC.

The Korea Meteorological Administration announced that temperatures higher than the average will continue until the next day. A meteorological official stated, "Tomorrow, due to a pressure trough coming from the north, southern winds will blow in our country," and "Temperatures are expected to be high until then, but from Friday, they are expected to return to normal levels."
