On the 21st, a day of abundant sunlight and a time of growth, the daily low temperatures in Seoul, Incheon, and other metropolitan areas, as well as parts of Gangwon and Yeongnam, reached their highest levels on record for May. The early heat, caused by southerly winds and fog, is expected to persist into the following day.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, as of 9:40 a.m., the lowest daily temperature in Seoul, Incheon, Gangwon, and parts of Yeongnam was the highest on record for May. In particular, Seoul's low of 23 degrees Celsius broke the record for the hottest day since relevant observations began in October 1907. The previous record high was 21.8 degrees Celsius in 2018, the hottest year on record.

Including Seoul, a total of 11 regions broke their record lows for May on this day. Among them, Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, barely avoided a tropical night for May, with temperatures hovering above 25 degrees Celsius until 11:30 p.m. the previous day before dropping to 23.8 degrees Celsius that morning. A tropical night is defined as a period in which the temperature does not fall below 25 degrees Celsius from 6:01 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. the following day.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) attributes the May heatwave to warm, humid winds, thick fog, and a warming effect. Warm, vapor-laden southerly winds blew into the country from a mobile high-pressure system east of Japan, causing temperatures the previous day and that day to be 2 to 7 degrees higher than the annual average (lowest 10 to 15 degrees, highest 22 to 27 degrees). The morning low on the 21st is forecast to be 13 to 21 degrees, with a daytime high of 17 to 28 degrees.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) announced that higher-than-average temperatures will continue through the following day. A KMA official said, "Tomorrow, a trough of low pressure descending from the north will bring southerly winds to our country. Temperatures are expected to remain high until that day, returning to normal levels starting Friday."
