Daegu District Prosecutors Office Criminal Division 2 (Chief Prosecutor Kim Seong-won) approached a woman with severe intellectual disabilities, registered a marriage, and then took all her assets.
A (34) was detained and indicted on charges of theft (quasi-fraud). Co-conspirator B, who assisted A in the crime, was also indicted without detention.
According to the prosecution's investigation, they are suspected of approaching a severely intellectually disabled woman residing in a disability protection facility from May to July 2023, embezzling 75 million won saved by the victim over 10 years, or taking out loans in the victim's name.
The stolen money was used as gambling funds.
An official from the prosecution stated, "During the police investigation, because Mr. A and the victim are legally married, the kinship exemption regulation was applied, leading to a decision not to indict. We requested supplementary investigation and subsequently detained Mr. A."
