SKT CEO bows his head... "Free SIM card replacement from the 28th"
In relation to the recent SK Telecom subscriber SIM card information leak incident, SK Telecom CEO Yoo Young-sang bowed his head and sincerely apologized. SK Telecom announced that, in connection with this hacking incident, they will replace SIM cards free of charge for interested subscribers starting from the 28th in order to alleviate concerns about secondary damage to subscribers.
Yoo Young-sang, CEO of SK Telecom, held an emergency meeting at the SK Telecom building in Euljiro, Seoul, on the 25th, and said, "We sincerely apologize to our customers who trust and use SK Telecom and to society for causing great inconvenience and concern."
He also stated, "We will implement an additional measure to replace SIM cards for all customers using SK Telecom free of charge if they wish."
This measure was prepared with the aim of alleviating customer concerns as much as possible, following the strengthening of the previous SIM card protection service and the blocking of abnormal authentication attempts (FDS).
SK Telecom will begin offering free SIM card (including eSIM) replacement services to subscribers starting at 10 a.m. on the 28th. The service will be available to all subscribers wishing to replace their SIM cards and will be conducted at T World stores nationwide and airport roaming centers.
The replacement target is mobile communication subscribers as of midnight on the 18th (one-time only), excluding some watches and kids' phones.
If it is difficult to make a same-day replacement due to initial user congestion, you can apply for a reservation at the visited store. Since airport SIM card replacement takes additional time, it is recommended to visit with ample time in advance.
SK Telecom will retroactively apply the free SIM card replacement service from the 19th to the 27th to customers who paid out of pocket for SIM replacements during that period, and will separately refund the costs already paid by customers. Additionally, the same measures will be applied to low-cost mobile subscribers using SK Telecom's network. The timing and method of implementation will be announced later by each low-cost mobile provider.
SK Telecom explained that, in addition to strengthening abnormal authentication attempts that have the same effect as SIM card replacement (FDS) blocking and the free 'SIM Protection Service,' they are also adding a free SIM replacement service, allowing for safer protection of information.
SK Telecom has raised the threshold for blocking abnormal authentication attempts to the highest level to prevent illegal SIM card cloning following this cyber intrusion incident. Additionally, real-time monitoring is continuously being strengthened.
For the SIM card protection service, 2.06 million people signed up as new members over the three days starting from the 22nd. The total number of members is 2.4 million.
Additionally, we plan to enhance the service next month so that the SIM card protection service can be used even while roaming.
Yoo Young-sang, CEO of SK Telecom, stated, "SK Telecom prioritizes customer trust above all and will further strengthen its security system and develop measures to enhance the protection of customer information." He added, "Through this incident, we will once again reaffirm our commitment to being a responsible and fundamental company."
