According to the revised law, such interference with alcohol testing shall be punishable by imprisonment for not less than one year and not more than five years.

A fine of more than 5 million won but not exceeding 20 million won may be imposed.

 

The so-called 'drinking game' method became a social controversy in May 2023 due to the incident involving singer Kim Ho-joong.

Mr. Kim fled after causing a drunk driving accident in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, and later purchased a canned beer at a convenience store.

It was revealed that the purchase was made, raising suspicions of intentional measurement interference.

 

After similar incidents continued to occur, in November of the same year, the National Assembly explicitly legislated to punish such acts.

The so-called 'Kim Ho-joong Prevention Act' has been passed.

 

The police regard drunk driving as a crime with a high degree of intentionality and will continue to apply the 'zero-tolerance policy'.

They have a policy to respond strongly.

 

In particular, individuals caught drinking alcohol four or more times within the past five years, or those involved in fatal accidents due to alcohol consumption, will have their vehicles confiscated.

It was announced that priority will be given to reviewing the application of the principle of detention investigation.

 

According to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, last year they confiscated 41 vehicles involved in habitual drunk driving.

Last month, a driver who was intoxicated to the point of license cancellation caused an accident with their vehicle.

Seized cases have been reported.

 

A police official stated, "Drunk driving is a crime comparable to a predictable act of murder," and "obstruction of measurement."

He emphasized that it will be regarded as a serious crime and that investigations and punishments will be strengthened.
