Five foods that cancer experts say they do not eat
The cancer incidence rate among Koreans is 287 per 100,000 people, higher than Japan's 267 and also higher than China's 201. Additionally, statistics have shown that approximately 2 out of 5 men and 1 out of 3 women are likely to develop cancer. In response, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that about one-third of cancers can be prevented through preventive measures and emphasizes the importance of managing lifestyle habits.
In fact, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) identified smoking as the cause of 32% of cancer cases and dietary factors as responsible for 30%. This is a much higher percentage compared to alcohol consumption (3%) or genetic factors (5%), especially since stomach and colorectal cancers, which are common among Koreans, are closely related to dietary habits.
Because of this, salty foods, spicy foods, processed meats, and alcohol are considered major factors that increase the risk of stomach cancer, and colon cancer has also been found to be closely associated with the consumption of red meat and processed meats. In other words, the foods consumed daily play an important role in cancer prevention, and most experts are calling for caution in dietary intake.
1. Processed meat
To prevent cancer first and foremost, it is important to reduce the intake of processed meats. Processed meats such as sausages, bacon, and jerky are more likely to produce carcinogens during processes like salting and smoking. In fact, the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified processed meats as carcinogenic, warning that consuming more than 50 grams per day increases the risk of cancer by 18%. In this regard, the American Heart Association has recommended limiting processed meat intake to less than 100 grams per week.
2. Alcohol
Alcohol is also considered a major factor to avoid for cancer prevention. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported research findings indicating that alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing various cancers such as laryngeal cancer, esophageal cancer, and liver cancer. Since even small amounts of alcohol can increase the risk of cancer, abstinence is recommended whenever possible. If consumption is unavoidable, experts suggest limiting women to one drink per day and men to two drinks or less.
3. Red meat
Additionally, red meat, which is a type of red meat, is also considered a food ingredient to be cautious of for cancer prevention. In particular, red meats such as beef and pork are classified as carcinogenic substances along with processed meats. One of the iron components found in red meat, called 'heme iron,' has been shown to promote the formation of carcinogenic chemicals. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reports that red meat is associated not only with colorectal cancer but also with pancreatic and prostate cancers, and recommends limiting red meat intake to within 350 to 500 grams per week.
4. Foods high in sugar and fat content
In addition, foods high in sugar and fat content can negatively impact cancer prevention. High-sugar and high-fat foods such as cakes, snacks, and hamburgers can cause obesity, which is known to increase the risk of certain cancers such as colon cancer by up to twice. In particular, increased body fat can elevate the risk of cancer through hormonal changes and inflammatory responses in the body, so moderation in consumption is recommended.
5. Burnt food
Finally, charred food cooked at high temperatures should also be avoided to prevent cancer. In particular, cooking meat or fish at high temperatures for a long time can produce carcinogens, which are considered risk factors for stomach, colon, pancreatic, and breast cancers. Experts emphasize reducing the intake of barbecue and fried foods, and ensuring that burnt parts are always removed during cooking.
To prevent cancer, it is most important to minimize the intake of carcinogenic foods and maintain a healthy diet consisting of fresh vegetables and fruits.
According to a WHO report, approximately 30% of cancer prevention can be achieved through improved eating habits. In other words, checking one's diet and practicing healthy choices are the most effective ways to reduce the risk of cancer.
