"Drinking coffee frequently increases 'this' in the body by 8 times"... There was an astonishing effect
A study has found that people who frequently drink coffee have up to eight times more beneficial bacteria in their intestines compared to those who do not, drawing attention.
According to a study published in the international journal Nature Microbiology on the 8th, coffee can serve as an important mediator connecting the gut microbiome ecosystem and human health, beyond being a simple preferred beverage.
In this study led by Professor Nicola Segata from the Department of Biology and Computer Life Sciences at the University of Trento in Italy, approximately 22,000 adults residing in the United States and the United Kingdom were analyzed to examine the correlation between dietary habits and gut microbiota.
Research findings showed that the intestines of people who frequently consume coffee contained up to eight times more of a beneficial bacteria called Lawsonibacter asaccharolyticus compared to those who do not.
This was the same even when consuming decaffeinated coffee as well as regular coffee. It suggests that the increase in beneficial gut bacteria from coffee is not solely due to the caffeine content.
In laboratory research, it was confirmed that quinic acid, an antioxidant component found in coffee, plays an important role in the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.
Quinic acid is an antioxidant found not only in coffee beans but also in various plant-based foods such as apples, blueberries, and cherries, and is known to contribute to reducing inflammation and oxidative stress.
Chlorogenic acid, abundant in coffee, is broken down by intestinal microbes and converted into quinic acid, a process the research team hypothesized promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria.
Additionally, the research team explained that polyphenol components such as chlorogenic acid provide prebiotic effects to beneficial gut bacteria, increasing the diversity of gut microbiota, and also contribute to boosting immunity and improving digestive functions.
The research team explained, "This study is a rare case demonstrating that a single food item like coffee can directly interact with specific gut microbiota," and added, "It will be an important turning point in uncovering the link between gut health and food."
Coffee is already well known as a food that promotes intestinal motility and aids in bowel movements. The results of this study added a new meaning of 'intestinal health' to the functional benefits of coffee.
In this study, in addition to coffee, aronia (black chokeberry) was also identified as a food that promotes the proliferation of beneficial bacteria. This suggests that there can be various options when composing a diet for gut health.
Experts stated, "Coffee consumption can have a positive impact on overall health by promoting the proliferation of beneficial gut bacteria and increasing microbial diversity," and added, "This could serve as the foundation for a new health management strategy that combines gut microbiota and dietary therapy."

They say that coffee and beneficial gut bacteria have a good interaction.
