Why did only the buildings built by China collapse... Thailand launches investigation
The collapsed building was constructed by the Thai local joint venture of 'Zhongtie 10th Bureau,' a construction company affiliated with China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC), a Chinese state-owned enterprise, in collaboration with 'Italian-Thai Development.' Over the past three years, more than 2 billion baht has been spent on the construction.
Since a huge amount of funds were invested, and none of the buildings currently under construction, including the Bangkok skyline, suffered earthquake damage, suspicions of poor construction practices have been raised. In particular, the fact that the building collapsed alone despite the structural framework being completed by the end of March last year suggests a high likelihood of design or construction defects.
Prime Minister Patongtan stated the day before, "An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 did not cause any problems for most buildings except for one. Seismic design for all buildings in Bangkok is already mandated by law," raising concerns about potential substandard construction.
Professor Suchachavi Suwansawas, a civil engineer and politician from the Thai Democratic Party, also told The Telegraph, "Something is definitely wrong. All other buildings, even high-rise buildings under construction, are safe. It could be a design flaw or construction error." However, he refrained from drawing conclusions, saying, "It's too early to tell."
The fact that four Chinese individuals entered the collapse site immediately after the accident, carrying documents, and were subsequently detained by Thai police is also raising suspicions.
Thai media reported that Chinese Ambassador Han Zchang, based in Bangkok, met with Deputy Prime Minister Anutin on this day, expressing condolences over the building collapse and casualties, and conveyed their willingness to cooperate with the investigation. Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister Anutin reportedly told the ambassador that if the investigation confirms facts such as poor construction or the use of unqualified materials, legal responsibility will be pursued.
Meanwhile, after a building collapsed in Bangkok, numerous related posts appeared on Chinese social media (SNS), but they were reportedly deleted immediately.
