A man in his 30s with a history of three days of hospitalization due to prodromal symptoms of a myocardial infarction.

  1. Diagnosis and Symptoms: Myocardial infarction (prodromal symptoms) / Palpitations, nausea, vomiting, etc.
  2. Treatment hospital: Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital Emergency Room → Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital Cardiology Department
  3. Treatment method: medication therapy

It was early 2020, just before the outbreak of COVID-19. I was commuting as usual on Line 9, the hell subway, when suddenly my heart started pounding rapidly. I sometimes felt suffocated when the train was overcrowded, but that day was particularly difficult. Then I suddenly started to feel nauseous, and just before vomiting, I kept feeling a hot saliva in my mouth. I got off at the nearest station because I couldn't stand. It was hard to stand, so I asked the people around me for help, and they called 119.

My heart kept pounding continuously, and I vomited several times before the ambulance arrived. When the ambulance arrived and I was briefly examined, I don't think I even had a chance to answer properly. I hurried to the emergency room at Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital, where they performed an electrocardiogram and blood tests. The results indicated that I was showing early signs of a myocardial infarction. I had heard a lot about heart attacks, but I never thought something like this would happen to me. I am young and had no prior medical history, so I was stunned and suddenly scared. Fortunately, I arrived at the hospital in the early stage of the prodromal symptoms of a myocardial infarction, and they said I wouldn't need surgery or invasive procedures. They decided to monitor my condition with medication for a few days.

Looking back at my past health check-up results, my blood pressure and fasting blood sugar were high, but due to the nature of shift work, I couldn't sleep during my days off and took the exam, so I deliberately ignored it. (At that time, my cholesterol levels were normal.) I was really ignorant. I decided to be hospitalized for three days, and the day before discharge, I had an electrocardiogram and blood tests again, and the results returned to the normal range, so I was able to be discharged on the planned day.

Even after discharge, I received outpatient treatment once a week for a month. After that, I transferred my care to a local medium-sized hospital. Since then, I have been trying to avoid foods that are overly salty or sweet. I also maintain regular aerobic exercise. I was already quite a bit of walking before, but since then, I have been jogging about three days a week as well.

What I want to say in this article is that myocardial infarction can happen to anyone regardless of age. Although rare, there are some patients in their 30s who experience a myocardial infarction, and the number has significantly increased compared to the past. I also heard that myocardial infarction is more common in obese people than in thin people, but this is just a simple comparison; everyone should be cautious. When I went to the hospital, I was 173cm tall and weighed 52kg, which is quite thin, yet I showed warning signs of a myocardial infarction.

There are often people around who say, "Why would you go to a hospital for something like this?" but if you feel even a little off, going to the hospital is the best choice. I believe you should never diagnose and prescribe for yourself^^
