(Health Tip) Drink kombucha to boost immunity and manage diabetes.
Many people have tried kombucha, right?
Did you see the news recently?
Research has shown that regular consumption of kombucha by patients with type 2 diabetes can improve fasting blood sugar levels. Type 2 diabetes is a condition characterized by decreased insulin secretion in the body, leading to high blood sugar levels. It progresses relatively slowly compared to type 1 diabetes and is commonly observed in overweight individuals over the age of 40.
Dan Merenstein, a professor of family medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine in the United States, and his joint research team published this paper in the international journal 'Frontiers in Nutrition' on the 1st. According to the research team, this is the first experimental study on the efficacy of kombucha in patients with diabetes.
Kombucha is a fermented beverage made by adding beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus plantarum to sweetened green or black tea. During fermentation, carbonation is produced, giving it a refreshing sensation when consumed. It is low in calories and the beneficial bacteria it contains are known to eliminate harmful bacteria in the gut, boost immunity, and improve bowel movements and digestive functions.
The research team concluded that there have been no studies on the efficacy of kombucha in diabetic patients. This is because the only evidence of blood sugar-lowering effects has been observed in small-scale studies involving rodent models such as mice and in individuals without diabetes.
The research team divided 12 diabetic patients into two groups and conducted a four-week experiment. One group drank 240 ml of commercially available kombucha daily, while the other group consumed a placebo beverage (a control drink used to test the effect of clinical drugs).
As a result, diabetic patients who drank kombucha for four weeks saw their average fasting blood sugar levels drop from 164 mg/dL to 116 mg/dL. The group that drank the placebo beverage also experienced a slight decrease in their levels, but the change was not statistically significant. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends maintaining fasting blood sugar levels between 70 and 130 mg/dL.
The research team confirmed the microbial composition of kombucha fermentation through RNA (ribonucleic acid) sequence analysis. The analysis results showed that kombucha mainly consists of lactic acid bacteria, acetic acid bacteria, and the yeast Dekkera. The research team analyzed that these microorganisms helped improve blood sugar levels in diabetic patients.
The research team stated, "This is the first clinical trial to confirm the effects of kombucha consumption in diabetic patients," and added, "We hope that future large-scale clinical trials will provide more definitive evidence of kombucha's blood sugar-lowering effects."
Many diabetes patients and those who need to prevent diabetes probably learned about kombucha from this news.
