Cucumbers are good for both dieting and health, but many people avoid them due to their distinctive taste.

If you dislike cucumbers but enjoy pickles, can you fully reap the health benefits of cucumbers by eating only pickles?

 

You should not eat too much pickled vegetables, such as pickles or cucumber pickles. 

Consuming excessive amounts can irritate the esophagus. A study published in the British Journal of Cancer found that eating large quantities of pickled vegetables can double the risk of developing esophageal cancer. This finding was based on a meta-analysis of 34 papers on the correlation between food and esophageal cancer. The World Cancer Research Fund has also warned that consuming too much salted preserved food, such as pickled vegetables, increases the risk of cancer. Pickled vegetables are also harmful to teeth due to their high acidity. The acetic acid in the vinegar used to pickle vegetables can damage teeth. Furthermore, since some products contain added sugar, frequent consumption can lead to tooth decay.


It is best to eat cucumbers raw.

 

You might not like the unique taste, but since it is 95% water, it is very refreshing and helps quench thirst.

 

It contains a variety of antioxidants, such as flavonoids. Rich in potassium, it helps excrete sodium from the body. It is also a diet food. With 11 kcal per 100g, it is lower in calories than bananas (77 kcal per 100g) or tomatoes (19 kcal per 100g). It contains Vitamin C, which is involved in skin collagen synthesis, helping with skin health and fatigue recovery; however, Vitamin C is sensitive to heat and is easily destroyed when heated. To maximize the intake of Vitamin C in cucumbers, they must be consumed raw.

 

If you dislike the distinctive taste of cucumbers, you can wash them by rubbing the surface with coarse salt and rinsing them with water. This will alleviate the bitterness to some extent. Remove the stem end, as the bitterness is particularly strong and pesticides may be concentrated there.
