Eggs were once a food item that some health-conscious people avoided because of the cholesterol they contained. However, research has dispelled these concerns.
One such study, published by a Chinese research team in the British Society of Cardiology, found that people who eat one egg a day have a lower risk of heart disease and stroke than those who eat none. This study, conducted by researchers at Peking University and the University of Oxford, tracked cardiovascular disease in 500,000 Chinese people for nine years.
Those who reported eating eggs daily had an 11% lower risk of developing heart disease and an 18% lower risk of dying from related diseases compared to those who did not eat eggs at all. The effect of eggs on stroke was even more pronounced, with a 26% and 10% lower risk of hemorrhagic stroke (cerebral hemorrhage) and ischemic stroke (cerebral infarction), respectively.
This study (Associations of egg consumption with cardiovascular disease in a cohort study of 0.5 million Chinese adults) was published in the international academic journal BMJ Journals Heart.
