It is apple season. Loved by everyone for their sweet taste and crunchy texture, apples offer various health benefits. .

 

First, it is good for preventing heart disease. This is thanks to an antioxidant component called flavan-3-ol, a type of flavanol found in apples. This component lowers blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke. A joint research team from the U.S. and the U.K. analyzed 157 clinical trials and 15 studies, and found that consuming 'one apple' daily, equivalent to 400–600 mg of flavan-3-ol,

 

It has been shown to be helpful in preventing heart disease and stroke. It also improved total cholesterol and bad cholesterol levels and had the effect of lowering blood sugar.

Eating an apple in the morning helps with weight loss. According to a study by Pennsylvania State University, the group that ate an apple in the morning reduced their calorie intake by about 15%. The calorie content of an apple is 57 kcal per 100g, which is slightly higher than that of tangerines (39 kcal), pears (51 kcal), and grapefruits (30 kcal). However, it provides a strong feeling of fullness, so eating just a small amount helps control meal portions. Apples are rich in pectin, a component that aids gastrointestinal motility and prevents constipation.

 

Apples are also beneficial for maintaining skin health during the dry transitional seasons. The malic acid, vitamins, and sugars abundant in apples provide elasticity to the skin and make rough skin clear and smooth. The quercetin found in the peel acts as an antioxidant, preventing aging. Citric acid, which gives apples their sour taste, is effective in breaking down and eliminating fatigue-causing substances. Eating apples can help restore vitality and promote restful sleep.

 

Apples with rough skin and even coloring are the tastiest. They are even better if they feel heavy and firm when held in the hand (Source: Rural Development Administration). They should not be stored with other fruits, as the ethylene hormone released by apples causes other fruits to ripen quickly.
