If I drink milk in the morning, I get stomach pain and diarrhea... Will my body adapt if I keep drinking it?
If I drink milk in the morning, I get stomach pain and diarrhea... Will my body adapt if I keep drinking it?
There are people who get an upset stomach just from drinking milk. If they ignore it and keep drinking, will there ever be a day when their body adapts?
Lactose intolerance refers to the symptoms such as ▲abdominal pain ▲diarrhea ▲bloating ▲distension ▲gas ▲nausea that occur after consuming foods containing lactose. Lactose is a type of sugar found in milk, and it is also present in dairy products such as cheese, ice cream, and yogurt. People with insufficient activity of the lactase enzyme (lactase) in the small intestinal mucosa are more prone to lactose intolerance. Unbroken lactose in the small intestine draws in water, and in the large intestine, it is fermented by intestinal bacteria, producing gas.
Lactose intolerance often develops later in life.
One cause is the decrease in the production of lactase enzyme as people age. Genetic factors also play a role. It is known that Asians generally experience a reduction in lactase production after the age of 6. Additionally, if the intestinal mucosa is damaged due to infection or inflammation, lactase enzymes may be removed, leading to temporary lactose intolerance.
Lactose intolerance is usually diagnosed based on symptoms alone. Symptoms occur only when consuming lactose-containing foods, and if symptoms disappear when not consuming them, lactose intolerance is diagnosed. If symptoms are ambiguous, diagnosis is made through testing. This involves giving the patient a certain amount of lactose and then measuring the amount of hydrogen gas produced by fermentation of lactose in the intestines and exhaled in the breath. ▲ It is used to distinguish from conditions like acute enteritis ▲ irritable bowel syndrome, which are causes of simple diarrhea.
Lactose intolerance has no specific cure. Symptoms disappear when you avoid milk and dairy products.
However, quitting milk is not the only answer. According to medical experts, consuming about two glasses of milk a day in small amounts may help alleviate symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea even if you have lactose intolerance. This is because continuous intake of lactose allows gut bacteria that influence lactose fermentation to adapt to lactose.
For people for whom this method does not work, there is also a way to add lactase enzyme to milk and refrigerate it for about 12 hours to break down the lactose.
If you choose not to drink milk, it is good to eat foods high in calcium such as anchovies, tofu, and broccoli to prevent calcium and vitamin D deficiency.
