Research has shown that practicing vegetarianism until middle age can reduce the risk of disease, but after age 65, it may actually have adverse effects.
A research team at Romilda University in the United States conducted a follow-up study on 88,400 adults over approximately 11 years. Participants were classified based on their diet into: non-vegetarians, semi-vegetarians (primarily vegetarian but occasionally consuming meat or seafood), pescatarians (eating fish), lacto-ovo vegetarians (consuming dairy and eggs), and vegans.
During the follow-up period, 12,515 people died. The analysis showed that vegetarians had an 11% lower risk of death from all causes compared to non-vegetarians. The risk of developing specific diseases was reduced by ▲48% for kidney failure, ▲43% for infectious diseases, ▲49% for diabetes, and ▲27% for ischemic heart disease. Various types of vegetarians, including pescatarian, semi-vegetarian, and those who consume fish, also had a lower overall risk of death compared to non-vegetarians. The risk of death was respectively ▲18% lower for pescatarian vegetarians, ▲15% lower for those who consume dairy and eggs, and ▲3% lower for vegans.
However, practicing vegetarianism at the age of 65 or older had the opposite effect.
In the case of older vegetarians, the risk of death from neurological diseases was higher than that of non-vegetarians. The mortality risks for each disease were 17% for stroke, 13% for dementia, and 37% for Parkinson's disease.
The research team analyzed that vegetarianism leads to a deficiency of unsaturated fatty acids, which are beneficial nutrients for brain health. The team stated that adding omega-3-rich oily fish such as salmon and mackerel to the diet can reduce the risk of developing neurological diseases. Omega-3 is a type of fat found in fish cell membranes, which helps prevent Alzheimer's disease and dementia by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress responses.
The British Nutrition Society stated, "Omega-3s are abundant in eggs, nuts, and seeds, but significantly less than in oily fish, so adding fish to the diet is effective for brain health in old age."
