Fruits are good for the body and taste good, but eating them can be bothersome. This is because even if you eat the skin, you still have to remove the seeds. Sometimes, even this can be too much trouble, so small seeds like apple seeds or grape seeds are sometimes eaten as they are. However, there are seeds that are better not to eat, so caution is needed.
Watermelon, grape, and chamoe seeds contain many antioxidant components
Some seeds are full of beneficial nutrients. Watermelon seeds are rich in linolenic acid and vitamin E, which help maintain vascular health. Although they have a bitter taste, they contain cucurbitacin, which inhibits the production of active oxygen, making them good for anti-aging and cancer prevention. Grape seeds have a high content of polyphenols, which are antioxidants. Polyphenols help with cell regeneration, prevent aging, and improve skin elasticity. They are also effective in preventing dementia. According to a study by a research team at Mount Sinai University in the United States, people who consume a lot of grape seeds experience a reduction in beta-amyloid, a component that affects memory decline, compared to those who do not.
Melon seeds are also beneficial for the body. Melons are rich in folate, a type of vitamin B, and the part of the seed cluster in the center of the melon, called 'taejwa,' contains especially high levels of folate. The flesh contains about 15 micrograms of folate, while the taejwa has over five times that amount, at 80 micrograms. Folate is important for cell division and growth, and it helps in the secretion of the brain neurotransmitter norepinephrine. Eating the taejwa can also supplement vitamin C. Vitamin C is a well-known antioxidant that boosts immune function and activates metabolism.
Do not eat apple, cherry, peach, or apricot pits.
Some seeds are toxic and should not be eaten. Apples, cherries, peaches, and apricots are representative examples. The seeds of these fruits contain cyanogenic compounds. Cyanogenic compounds are not toxic by themselves but are broken down by enzymes in the body into hydrogen cyanide, which is toxic. Eating them once or twice is not a problem, but frequent consumption can cause headaches, dizziness, anxiety, vomiting, and other symptoms. In severe cases, blood pressure rises and there are issues with heart rhythm. Therefore, seeds from apples, cherries, peaches, and apricots are excluded from the 'List of Food Ingredients' regulated by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, which permits their use in food manufacturing.
