Salads are a common staple among dieters. People often assume they're low in calories because they're made from raw vegetables. In reality, salads are rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, and are highly filling, making them effective for weight loss. However, caution is advised, as salad dressings often contain as many calories as a bowl of rice.

Mayonnaise is a particularly important ingredient in salad dressings. Thousand Island dressing and Caesar dressing are typical mayonnaise-based dressings. They contain 370 and 400 kcal per 100g, respectively. While this may vary depending on the amount of vegetables, assuming you eat about 50g of dressing for a single salad plate, you're already consuming more calories than a bowl of rice, which contains about 300 kcal.

Mayonnaise is also high in sodium. Thousand Island dressing has 863g of sodium per 100g, and if you pair it with salads containing chicken or seasoned chicken breast, your calorie and sodium intake will increase even more. The same goes for oil-based French dressing. French dressing is made from olive oil, vinegar, onion, lemon juice, and other ingredients. Paprika or ketchup may also be added for color. Due to the high content of olive oil, 100g contains 457kcal.

To see weight loss benefits, consider consuming vinegar-based dressings. Balsamic vinegar, made from fermented grape juice, is relatively low in calories, at 88.2 kcal per 100g. Furthermore, the citric acid, which gives it its tart flavor, helps break down fat, contributing to weight loss. Another option is to make low-calorie diet dressings at home, such as tofu and nut dressings or pumpkin yogurt dressings.

Meanwhile, eating eggs with salad is a good idea. It helps increase vitamin E absorption. Vitamin E, which has antioxidant properties, reduces skin and hair damage and improves blood circulation. In fact, according to a Purdue University research team in the United States, blood tests showed that people who ate salad with eggs had four to seven times higher vitamin E absorption rates than those who didn't.
