Prevent blood-sticking cholesterol by eating this delicious treat.
High LDL cholesterol levels in our bodies are a major cause of cardiovascular disease. In fact, according to researchers from the Department of Cardiology at Seoul National University Hospital, those in the top 25% of total cholesterol levels had a 25% higher risk of myocardial infarction than those in the bottom 25%. Those with high LDL cholesterol levels had a 41% higher risk of myocardial infarction. Let's explore three foods that can help lower cholesterol levels.
◇Wake
The sesaminol and sesamin components in sesame seeds help keep the blood clean. High-fat meals in particular cause cholesterol to build up in the blood, narrowing blood vessels. Sesaminol removes cholesterol and protects blood vessels. Sesamin lowers blood cholesterol levels by blocking cholesterol absorption in the small intestine and promoting its excretion. However, sesame seeds are high in calories, so it's best to limit your daily intake to around 10 grams, a large spoonful.
◇Seaweed mi
Wakame also contains many blood-purifying ingredients, such as fucoidan and alginic acid. Fucoidan, a dietary fiber found in seaweed, helps prevent blood clots and purify the blood. Alginic acid, a soluble fiber found in wakame, helps excrete bad cholesterol and triglycerides. This helps prevent dyslipidemia (a condition caused by excessive lipids or fats in the blood) and arteriosclerosis (a condition caused by thickening and hardening of the arteries). However, raw wakame is high in sodium, so it's best to soak it in water before cooking to remove the saltiness.
◇Black beans
The rich protein and fatty acids in black beans are effective in suppressing cholesterol production, thus helping to reduce the risk of heart disease. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), black beans are nutritionally dense, earning them the nickname "superfood." Furthermore, the lecithin contained in beans helps regulate cholesterol levels and excrete fat accumulated in blood vessels. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends consuming approximately 1 to 3 cups of black beans per week.
