One of the foods that cannot be missed on Seollal is tteokguk. While beef is often added to tteokguk,

In addition to beef, there are foods that can be added to rice cake soup to enjoy not only the taste but also health benefits.

Let's look at four representative foods.

◇ Maesaengi

Maesaengi goes well with tteokguk.

It contains protein, calcium, and minerals such as iron, providing a nutritional balance with the carbohydrate-rich rice cake soup. It also offers a soft texture and enhances the refreshing taste of the broth.

Maesaengi is rich in dietary fiber, which aids intestinal peristalsis and promotes smooth bowel movements, making it a good food for dieting. It also contains a large amount of aspartic acid, which is beneficial for relieving hangovers, so rice cake soup with maesaengi can be eaten as a hangover cure. To fully appreciate the aroma of maesaengi, it is best to make the broth using only kelp and garlic.

◇ Perilla seed powder

If you want to simply add a nutty flavor to your rice cake soup, try adding perilla seed powder. When the vitamins A, C, and E contained in perilla seeds are absorbed into the body, they trigger an antioxidant reaction that helps activate intestinal function and restore vitality.

It is also good for anti-aging and skin care. Since perilla seed powder is the raw material for perilla oil, it is rich in alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid beneficial for brain health. However, boiling perilla seed powder for too long can make the taste bitter, so it is best to add it at the very end.

◇ Oyster

Oysters, which are in season during the winter, also pair well with tteokguk. Oysters are rich in essential minerals such as iron, calcium, copper, and iodine, which are good for boosting immunity, as well as vitamins B and E. In particular, oysters are rich in zinc.

Zinc is an essential mineral involved in insulin metabolism and nutrient synthesis, and it helps protect respiratory epithelial cells and alleviate inflammatory responses.

◇Oats

Oats are good for supplementing the nutritional deficiencies of tteokguk. This is because oats are rich in protein and B vitamins. If you replace rice cakes with oat cakes, you can also consume beta-glucan and avenanthramide, which are good for immunity.

Beta-glucan lowers LDL cholesterol levels and activates cellular immune function. Avenanthramide is a component found only in oats among grains; it has excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and is also beneficial for preventing dementia.
