Consistently eating eggs... contributes to the prevention of Alzheimer's disease

A paper published in the international academic journal 'Journal of Nutrition' reports that regularly eating eggs may help prevent Alzheimer's disease, a type of dementia. This is attributed to the choline content found in egg yolks. The study tracked 1,024 elderly Americans over more than seven years to examine the relationship between egg consumption and Alzheimer's disease. As a result, eating at least one egg per week was associated with a 47% reduction in the risk of developing Alzheimer's.

 

Approximately 39% of the preventive effect against Alzheimer's disease is attributed to choline. Choline contributes to the synthesis of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in memory and mood. It helps maintain cognitive function and prevent neurological disorders. One egg contains 169 mg of choline. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the recommended daily intake of choline for adult men is 550 mg, and for women, 425 mg. Additionally, unsaturated fatty acids and omega-3s found in eggs have been shown to reduce brain inflammation associated with neural degeneration. Consuming about two eggs a day does not need to raise concerns about cholesterol.

You cannot prevent dementia solely with foods like eggs. It is helpful to change overall lifestyle habits. The number of dementia patients in Korea is believed to have exceeded 1 million this year. Among dementia patients, the proportion of women is close to 70%, nearly twice that of men. The postmenopausal decline of female hormones (estrogen), which protect blood vessels, bones, and nerve cells, has significant aftereffects. Abnormalities in nerve cells can lead to depression and problems with cognitive abilities such as memory. In addition to Alzheimer's disease, which accounts for about 70% of dementia cases, preventing vascular dementia, which makes up about 20%, is also important.

Preventing depression is also important for dementia prevention and treatment. Depression must be treated with medication prescribed by a psychiatrist. In particular, severe sleep disorders can lead to the accumulation of proteins that cause dementia in the brain, further impairing cognitive function. The only confirmed method of dementia prevention so far is regular physical activity (exercise). Staying active in daily life helps maintain cognitive function. Sitting for long periods increases the risk of dementia as well as other diseases.

Drawing pictures and keeping a daily journal that involve recalling the entire day's memories help prevent dementia. Reflecting on what was done from morning to evening is good for maintaining cognitive functions. Learning a second foreign language and memorizing sentences also contribute to brain activity. Eating nutritious foods like eggs and actively moving the body and brain can help prevent the onset of dementia.
