Reasons why you should eat breakfast

 

Skipping breakfast can lead to overeating.

First, skipping breakfast leads to a lack of energy, making our body's preparation for activity insufficient.

In particular, since brain activity that requires the most glucose decreases, intellectual activity inevitably becomes dull.

During sleep, a person's body temperature drops by about 1°C, and when the body temperature decreases, brain activity also diminishes. Therefore, to maximize brain activity in the morning, it is necessary to raise the body temperature that has fallen during sleep. This preparation of the body is what breakfast provides.

According to data collected from elementary school students in Japan, about 70% of students who skip breakfast had a body temperature of around 35°C. In Japan, this 'hypothermia syndrome' has become a concern, leading to campaigns encouraging students to eat breakfast.

 

Secondly, if you do not eat breakfast, the appetite center inside the hypothalamus, located just above the pituitary gland which is the central hormone regulator, becomes excited throughout the morning.

Additionally, the nearby emotional center also becomes excited, leading to emotional instability.

Therefore, to calm down excitement, it is necessary to raise blood sugar levels. In other words, the carbohydrates eaten for breakfast should increase blood sugar levels to maintain a physiological stable state, allowing for comfortable studying.

 

Third, the adrenal cortex steroid hormones that break down food to produce energy and promote metabolic activity are released gradually during meals.

However, students with irregular eating habits or irregular snacking experience the secretion of adrenal hormones each time, disrupting the body's rhythm and causing emotional instability.

 

Fourth, people who skip breakfast and have a simple lunch tend to overeat at dinner.

Eating a large amount of food at once during the evening when activity levels are low leads to the accumulation of nutrients such as fats and carbohydrates, resulting in obesity.

During the morning or daytime, the accumulated nutrients are mostly used for energy required for activity, so there is little accumulation. Especially for adolescents in their peak growth period or physical and mental workers, who consume a lot of energy, a balanced breakfast with proper nutrition is essential.

 

However, for people at risk of obesity, it is better to supply necessary nutrients through fruits, vegetables, and milk in addition to carbohydrates and fats, and to alleviate hunger while initiating bodily functions rather than focusing solely on carbohydrate- or fat-rich diets.
