Rough or greasy... Knowing my 'scalp type' makes management easier
Hair condition can influence your impression just as much as your skin. Even if you wash your hair well, if your hair is severely frizzy or greasy, it's necessary to check your scalp. The scalp, like the skin, has different types, and proper care such as choosing the right shampoo and drying method according to your scalp type is essential for healthy scalp and hair. Let's examine my scalp type.
◇Neutral scalp = Must wash with mildly acidic shampoo every evening
If the scalp appears clear and milky or bluish-white, and is free of foreign substances, it is a neutral scalp. The pores are open, allowing for smooth absorption of oxygen and nutrients.
Neutral scalp care is not significantly more difficult than other scalp types. Use a mildly acidic shampoo to wash your scalp and hair thoroughly every evening. Remove dead skin cells and sebum in a timely manner to maintain cleanliness. After shampooing, ensure that your hair is completely dried from the roots to the ends to maintain the proper balance of oil and moisture on the scalp.
◇Oily scalp = Shampoo for oily scalp, scalp scaling is helpful
If sebum secretion increases rapidly due to inappropriate eating habits or stress, it can lead to an oily scalp. When sebum exits the pores, it spreads across the scalp and forms a thin film. Additionally, when various pollutants such as dead skin cells, dandruff, and dust accumulate on the scalp, it creates an environment conducive to bacterial growth. If not properly managed at this stage, inflammation can occur inside the pores, potentially developing into seborrheic dermatitis.
If you have an oily scalp, it is good to use a shampoo for oily hair to keep the scalp clean. Choose products containing natural ingredients that help control sebum, such as peppermint, menthol, or tea tree. However, be careful not to scrub the scalp too vigorously when shampooing, as this can stimulate the sebaceous glands and actually increase sebum production. Additionally, if an oily scalp is not properly dried after washing, it can easily develop a smell. It is recommended to use a hairdryer at least 20cm away from the hair to thoroughly dry the scalp. Regular scalp scaling can also be helpful. This involves removing sebum and dead skin cells that clog hair follicles, which is effective in keeping the scalp clean and reducing scalp inflammation. However, doing it too frequently can stimulate the sebaceous glands, so once a week is appropriate.
◇Dry scalp = Use a gentle shampoo and dry with cool air
A dry scalp is a condition where sebum secretion is insufficient, leading to dryness and dehydration of the scalp, opposite to an oily scalp. Even after washing the hair thoroughly, the scalp may feel itchy and dry. Due to impaired sebum production, dandruff and flakes can form on the scalp. If this condition persists, aged keratin builds up on the scalp, causing hair to gradually thin and lose elasticity.
If you have a dry scalp, it is better to choose a gentle or natural ingredient shampoo. Avoid soap or alkaline shampoos. Alkaline soaps have a very strong cleansing power, which can wash away not only dirt but also the nutrients and basic sebum of the scalp. Shampoo once a day is sufficient. Washing too frequently can make the scalp more sensitive and even drier. External stimuli can cause wounds or worsen inflammation, increasing the risk of hair loss. It is best to let the hair dry naturally after shampooing, and if you must use a hairdryer, dry with cool air. Additionally, it is recommended to protect the hair's surface with hair essence or similar products before drying.
