Suddenly feeling sleepy during the day...

Signs that this change is coming to your body

If suddenly during the daytime your whole body feels heavy and your eyes involuntarily close

It could be a sign that your period is about to start. From four days before to two days after your period, your body feels unusually tired during the day.

Around the time menstruation begins, hormonal changes make it difficult for our bodies to fall asleep easily at night.

Research findings by Dr. Satoru Tsubota, a sleep medicine expert in Japan

80% of Japanese women experienced premenstrual syndrome, and among them, 41% experienced it before and after the onset of menstruation.

It was found that they experience sleep disorders. According to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) in the United States, 23% of women overall also...

Before menstruation, 30% reported experiencing sleep disturbances during their period, leading to daytime drowsiness.

About 10% experienced severe sleep disorders that significantly affected their daily lives.

During this period, the level of the hormone called progesterone increases.

This hormone raises the body's temperature and suppresses changes in body temperature.

However, to achieve deep sleep, your body temperature needs to drop slightly.

Dr. Tsubota said, "When body temperature fluctuations decrease, there is little difference in body condition between being awake and sleeping."

"At night, I can't sleep properly, and during the day, drowsiness overwhelms me."

Progesterone helps stabilize nerves and reduces brain excitation.

It was said to help secrete the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid, creating conditions that make it easy to feel sleepy during the day.

Progesterone is broken down into allopregnanolone, which relaxes the mood.

It is used as an anesthetic by producing metabolic products.

Muscle pain, depression, abdominal bloating, and breast tenderness, which are other symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, also disturb nighttime sleep.

If you feel excessively sleepy during the day, taking a walk in the sunlight can help improve your biological rhythm.

If you cannot go for a walk, drinking herbal tea containing lemongrass or chewing gum, nuts, etc., can be helpful.

Lemongrass contains aromatic components called citral and linalool.

These ingredients help you wake up from sleep.

Chewing gum, nuts, and other similar items activate the prefrontal cortex of the brain.

Drowsiness decreases, and concentration and work efficiency improve.

In a study published in a UK psychology journal, the group that chewed gum and performed tasks activated brain functions.

It was found to reduce drowsiness.

If you experience stress or do not maintain a balanced diet

Since sleep patterns are further disrupted, try to minimize stress as much as possible.

You should make an effort to eat healthy food regularly.
