The number of people eating alone is increasing ๐๐... the impact on health ๐ฑ๐ฑ

Research shows that frequent solo dining may harm health.
ย
As the number of single-person households and 'solo diners' (people who eat alone) increases, a study has found that frequent solo dining can harm health. In particular, solo diners are analyzed to have a higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome compared to those who dine with family or friends.
ย
According to the Korean Food Communication Forum (KOFRUM) on the 1st, Professor Yoo Kyung Park's team from the Department of Medical Nutrition at Kyunghee University's Graduate School of East-West Medicine analyzed the correlation between mixed eating habits and health in 4,910 adults who participated in the 2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The results showed that individuals who ate two meals alone a day, known as "honbap" (solo dining), had a 1.3 times higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome compared to those who ate with family or friends. This research was published in the Journal of the Korean Dietetic Association.
ย
Additionally, people who eat all three meals alone had a particularly higher risk of developing hypertension and depression.
ย
The likelihood of eating alone was higher among single-person households, while those with higher education and income levels and employed status were relatively less likely to eat alone.
ย
As the number of days eating alone increases, the response rate indicating feeling "extremely stressed" also rises. The prevalence of depression is also higher among people who eat all three meals alone each day.
ย
Eating alone increased the risk of metabolic syndrome, including waist circumference, fasting blood sugar, and blood pressure. The risk of developing metabolic syndrome for people who eat two meals alone per day was 1.3 times higher than for those who dine with acquaintances.
ย
People who eat all three meals alone have a noticeably higher incidence of hypertension. As the number of solo meals increases, there is also a marked decline in quality of life.
ย
Professor Park's team stated in their paper that "frequently eating alone is associated with depression" and that "solo dining is not just a matter of eating but also has a negative impact on mental health."
ย
A study also found that women who frequently eat alone have a 1.5 times higher risk of metabolic syndrome. In the case of men who eat alone, their blood triglyceride levels increased.
ย
Women who eat alone had worse waist circumference, blood triglyceride levels, blood HDL cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and fasting blood glucose compared to women who dine with others, meeting the diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome.
ย
Professor Seo's team pointed out in their paper that "eating alone can have a negative impact on psychological health" and that it "can increase nutritional risks and harm physical health."
