Abdominal obesity is a condition where excessive fat accumulates in the abdomen, causing the lower abdomen to bulge. In other words, it refers to excessive belly fat. Belly fat is not only unsightly but is also considered a risk factor for various diseases.
So, despite our best efforts to lose belly fat, many struggle. Why is that? We looked at data from the American men's health magazine "Men's Health" and other sources to find out why belly fat is so difficult to lose.
“I drink carbonated drinks often.”
Sugary sodas are low in calories, but they're not good for your diet. Studies show that frequent soda consumption increases waist circumference and abdominal fat.
Instead of carbonated beverages, it's best to drink water or unsweetened tea. If you find it difficult to drink water alone, try adding fruit slices to your drink. Coffee is also good, but it should be black and free of additives.
“I don’t get enough sleep.”
Lack of sleep reduces the secretion of hormones that regulate appetite. Conversely, ghrelin, the hunger hormone, is secreted more frequently. This hormone, when secreted, triggers hunger and stimulates appetite.
Conversely, levels of leptin, the hormone that makes you feel full, decrease. If you're having trouble controlling your appetite, consider whether you're getting enough sleep, usually around seven to eight hours.
Studies have shown that women who sleep less than five hours a night are 32% more likely to gain weight than those who sleep longer. Another study found that women who sleep around four hours a night tend to eat more fatty foods, consuming an average of 300 more calories per day.
“It’s too salty.”
Eating salty foods can cause bloating, but it's not just a feeling. Excessive salt causes water to escape from the bloodstream and into the skin. When flavoring your food, use less salt and instead incorporate herbs like red pepper powder, ginger, cumin, basil, parsley, and rosemary.
“You’re exercising wrong.”
Most people know that if they consistently do cardio exercises that strengthen the heart, such as running, they will become slimmer.
While these exercises may initially have a weight-loss effect, your body's metabolism soon adapts, and even if you continue exercising, you no longer burn calories. So, what are the best exercises for losing belly fat?
This involves combining aerobic exercise with muscle-strengthening exercises. Lifting barbells or dumbbells causes microscopic tears in the muscles, and the process of healing these tears uses energy, effectively burning calories.
Experts say that combining aerobic and strength training, combined with high-intensity interval training, maximizes belly fat reduction. Also, performing several sets of common core exercises like planks, bicycle crunches, hollow rock, and V-shaped sit-ups every day is a good strategy.
“My metabolic function has declined.”
All bodily functions decline with age, including the ability to burn calories. According to the Mayo Clinic, the average man consumes about 10 fewer calories per day each year.
While 10 calories a day may seem like a small amount, it translates to 0.5 kilograms of weight gain over the course of a year. Therefore, your daily calorie intake should also be considered based on your age.
Eating just 100 to 200 fewer calories per day than you currently consume will help you gain or lose weight. If you're trying to lose 5 kg or more, you should eat 400 to 500 fewer calories than usual.
“Insufficient magnesium intake”
Magnesium is a key element involved in over 300 chemical reactions in the body, including maintaining heartbeat and regulating blood sugar levels. It is particularly helpful for weight loss and body shaping.
Studies have shown that adequate magnesium intake can help regulate fasting blood sugar, fat, and insulin levels, which are factors in weight gain. Green leafy vegetables, legumes, and nuts are rich sources of magnesium.
“I’m under a lot of stress.”
Stress can also contribute to belly fat gain. Chronic anxiety and worry trigger the release of the stress hormone cortisol.
When this hormone is secreted, our bodies seek out high-calorie foods, such as fat and sugar, as a reward. Cortisol also stimulates the creation of new fat cells, leading to the accumulation of visceral fat. Visceral fat is a contributing factor to various chronic diseases.
=============
I also wonder if stress is the cause.
There are many reasons for gaining weight.
My mom always says that
I have to move haha
But there are many other reasons besides exercise that can have an impact.
