As I age, my body aches and hurts… I need to prevent these four things.

As we age, many people complain of pain in various parts of the body, including the knees, shoulders, and fingers. This is partly a natural part of aging. As this pain becomes more common after the age of 60 or 65, many people resort to pain relief patches or painkillers. Why does body pain occur, and what can we do to prevent and manage it? Dr. Brandon Bodorn, a geriatrician at the Mayo Clinic in the United States, said, "Pain throughout the body is very common in older adults. Chronic pain, which is particularly prevalent in those over 65, can reduce quality of life, make everyday tasks difficult, and disrupt sleep."

Pain not only causes physical discomfort, but also impacts mental and emotional health. It increases stress and frustration, reduces motivation and activity levels, and causes fatigue. Therefore, some argue that it's important to develop pain management strategies as we age. According to the Mayo Clinic News Network, the four main causes of body-wide pain, which typically occurs after age 60, are degenerative changes, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gynopenia (loss of muscle mass).

As we age, the human body naturally undergoes degenerative changes. As the cartilage covering our joints wears down and becomes damaged, arthritis becomes more likely to develop. This increases the risk of stiffness, aches, and pain in areas with high mobility, such as the knees, fingers, and spine. Furthermore, as the bones and surrounding tissues change with aging, osteoarthritis can develop, leading to pain. When the immune system malfunctions, inflammation occurs in the joints and surrounding tissues, leading to rheumatoid arthritis.

It is important to improve lifestyle habits such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, weight management, stress relief, and good sleep.

Sarcopenia can also cause localized pain. As we age, physical activity decreases and muscles naturally weaken. Muscles protect joints and facilitate movement. As muscle mass declines, the load on joints and bones increases, significantly increasing the risk of pain. Various inflammatory diseases and tissue damage are also major causes of pain in old age. Chronic inflammation increases rapidly with age. Aging reduces the body's ability to heal and slows the regeneration of damaged tissue. Consequently, even minor injuries can lead to prolonged healing or chronic pain.

Fibromyalgia is also common in people over 60. It causes widespread aches and pains, along with fatigue. The exact cause of this condition remains unknown, but it is believed to be closely linked to stress, lack of sleep, and nervous system disorders. As bone density declines with age, the risk of osteoporosis significantly increases. Even minor impacts can cause bones to break easily. Compression fractures in the spine, in particular, can lead to persistent back and waist pain.

How can we alleviate or eliminate this kind of body-wide pain? Lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, proper weight management, stress management, and adequate sleep, are essential. Maintaining regular exercise, even as you age, is crucial for pain management. Low-intensity exercises like walking, swimming, and yoga put less strain on joints. They strengthen muscles and joints and help increase flexibility. Exercise and stretching also improve blood circulation and relieve stiff muscles.

If severe pain persists, seek treatment at a geriatrics, orthopedics, or rheumatology clinic.

A balanced diet is also important. To reduce inflammation and maintain bone and muscle health, consume plenty of antioxidant-rich vegetables and fruits, fish rich in omega-3s, calcium, and vitamin D. Avoid coffee and salty foods, as they can reduce bone density. Being overweight or obese increases the stress on joints, leading to pain. Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce joint stress and pain. Stress and sleep deprivation are major factors that worsen pain. Reduce anxiety by engaging in meditation, deep breathing, and light walks. Maintaining a regular sleep routine is also important for pain management.

If severe pain persists and interferes with your daily life, you should immediately seek medical attention (e.g., orthopedics, rheumatology, geriatrics) for an accurate diagnosis and treatment. You can also seek physical therapy or a pain management clinic. While pain relief patches can provide temporary relief, they are not a fundamental solution. For chronic pain, it's best to seek professional help and receive systematic treatment.

Age-related body aches are inevitable. However, they can be significantly alleviated with proper care and lifestyle modifications. It's important to be sensitive to the warning signs your body sends you. It's also crucial to proactively address problems early on, rather than neglecting them. Don't give up and say, "Ailments are inevitable with age." Even older people need to maintain their health to live vibrant lives.

==============

As I get older, my body starts to ache all over.

There are many people complaining of pain.

You can relieve the pain by applying a patch or taking painkillers,

Fundamental treatment is very important.

When I go to my parents' house, there is always a patch in the medicine bottle.

There are different types, but now I think I'm like that

If you're sick, it seems like you just put on a patch.
