It is a natural phenomenon for eye mucus to form when waking up in the morning. The eyes produce waste materials such as mucus and oil by blinking, but during sleep, blinking stops, causing waste to accumulate. However, if the color and shape of the eye mucus change, eye disease should be suspected.
The most common cause of excessive eye discharge is dry eye syndrome. When sleeping in a dry environment or due to fatigue, tears become insufficient, preventing the removal of waste products from the eyes, which accumulate and form eye discharge. In cases of dry eye syndrome, the discharge is clear and stretches out in long strands.
Sometimes, when wiping away eye mucus, it can stretch out long. In this case, artificial tears should be used. If symptoms are severe, gel or ointment-type artificial tears are used.
If yellow eye discharge increases, it could be bacterial conjunctivitis or keratitis. The discharge turns yellow due to pus or inflammation caused by bacteria.
If clear eye discharge is flowing down, it may be viral conjunctivitis. Unlike bacteria, viruses do not produce pus, so the eye discharge tends to be clear.
If there is a lot of opaque white eye discharge, it could be blepharitis. When blepharitis occurs, the oil glands that secrete fat from the eyes become blocked and inflamed. At this time, small white particles resembling crumbs, known as eye discharge, get stuck at the openings of the oil glands. The edges of the eyelids may also become red.
If the eye discharge is yellow or opaque white, if it is difficult to open the eyes due to eye discharge, if vision deteriorates because of eye discharge, or if the eyes are red, swollen, and painful, you must see an ophthalmologist.
If you have excessive eye discharge, applying a warm compress is beneficial. If you are suffering from itchy allergic conjunctivitis, or if you have eye dryness with heat, pain, or discomfort, you should use a cold compress. Wrap ice in a towel and place it on your eye.
When experiencing symptoms such as eyelid inflammation, conjunctivitis, or dry eyes without heat or pain, apply warm compresses. Soak a towel in water that is not too hot and place it on your eyes 2 to 3 times a day for about 5 to 10 minutes.
