Our eyes are something we take for granted every day, yet they're often neglected. In fact, eye diseases are more common than you might think and can lead to serious health problems, so paying close attention to any changes in your eyes is crucial. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), at least 2.2 billion people worldwide suffer from some form of near or far vision impairment.

By understanding and appropriately addressing changes in your eyes, you can prevent disease or significantly reduce the damage it causes. The American health information media outlet Everyday Health, based on the opinions of ophthalmologists, explored some of the most common eye symptoms that should never be overlooked.

Shiny, floating objects

Sudden flashes of light, a noticeable increase in floaters (tiny spots, dots, circles, lines, or spider webs in the field of vision), shadows in the peripheral vision, or a gray curtain obscuring part of the field of vision can all be signs of retinal detachment, so caution is advised. Retinal detachment occurs when the retina detaches from the choroid, reducing the retina's sensory function and causing serious visual impairment. According to the National Eye Institute, retinal detachment is dangerous because it can lead to permanent vision loss or even blindness if not treated promptly with surgery.

As we age, we may occasionally experience flashes of light or small floaters, known as floaters. These are usually harmless. Floaters occur when the vitreous humor, which undergoes age-related changes such as wrinkling, develops floaters within the vitreous, casting shadows on the retina at the back of the eye. Flashes, which appear as sparkles, jagged lines, or wavy patterns, can also be caused by migraines.

Sudden vision loss, dry eye

Sudden loss of vision in one eye can be an early sign of a stroke. Difficulty seeing in one eye can indicate a blockage in a small artery or vein supplying blood to the eye. This can indicate other blockages, potentially leading to a more serious stroke.

Chronic dry eye, a common but inconvenient condition, is one of those symptoms that should never be overlooked. Dry eye can be caused by tear gland dysfunction or can be a symptom of autoimmune diseases such as Sjögren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or thyroid eye disease.

serious injury and pain

If you sustain a serious eye injury, especially if the pain worsens or vision changes, rather than improving over time, you should seek immediate medical attention. Eye injuries are dangerous, as they can lead to vision loss or even blindness.

If you have a serious eye injury, you may experience the following signs: persistent pain, sudden loss of vision, one eye not moving as well as the other, double vision or pain with eye movement, abnormal pupil size and shape, pupils that are bulging or sunken compared to the other eye, blood in the center of the eye or on the white of the eye, and a foreign body sensation when you blink or shed tears.

Small particles like sand, dirt, or dust can cause a foreign body sensation when they enter the eye. These can usually be easily washed away with tears or blinking. However, if the object is a man-made substance like metal or glass, the situation is different. Trying to remove it or rubbing it, as it won't disappear with tears or blinking, can cause further damage. Therefore, it's best to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Eye pain, in particular, requires careful attention, as it could be due to increased intraocular pressure, in addition to injury. This could be a sign of glaucoma. Primary open-angle glaucoma, the most common form of glaucoma, is painless and does not cause any changes in vision. However, a rare acute angle-closure glaucoma attack can cause pain, sudden blurred vision, headache, nausea, vomiting, and rainbow rings or halos around lights.

red, bloodshot eyes

Bloodshot eyes are also a sign of an abnormality and should be carefully examined. While bloodshot eyes caused by a cold or allergies may not be a major problem, conjunctivitis caused by bacteria or viruses can cause redness in one or both eyes. Bacteria can also accumulate around the eyelids, causing inflammation like blepharitis, which can lead to redness, dry eyes, and intermittent blurred vision.

To prevent eye diseases

It is necessary to make an effort to carefully examine any abnormalities that may occur in the eyes.

Take good care of your eye health ~

If we just leave it alone, it'll be a big problem.
