Winter is a time when the immune system can be weakened by the cold weather and dry air. The body is less able to effectively defend itself against viruses, increasing the risk of developing both major and minor illnesses. It's important to be aware of the signs your body sends you that your immune system is weakening and to take extra care of your health.

 

◇Signs of weakened immunity

 

▶Admission= When your immune system is weakened, symptoms of various sizes appear in your mouth. This is why tongue canker sores are more common when you're tired or stressed. A weakened immune system can lead to poor blood circulation, which reduces blood flow to the salivary glands and reduces saliva production. This also reduces the amount of antibiotics available, leaving you vulnerable to infection and causing tongue canker sores. Herpes stomatitis is also common. This condition occurs when a herpes carrier's immune system is weakened, and symptoms include the appearance of multiple small, 2-3mm-sized blisters around the lips.

▶Frequent colds= When your immune system is weakened, cold viruses can easily invade your body, making you more susceptible to catching a cold. Symptoms are more severe than usual and often take longer to resolve. Typically, cold symptoms, such as a runny nose, cough, and mild fever, last for three to four days before disappearing. However, when your immune system is significantly weakened, symptoms can last longer and even lead to a high fever.

 

▶Frequent stomachache= Persistent symptoms like abdominal pain and diarrhea after eating can also be due to a weakened immune system. Stomach aches and pains can also occur frequently due to stomach upsets or enteritis. A weakened immune system impairs the body's ability to eliminate bacteria and viruses that enter the gastrointestinal tract. Furthermore, an increase in harmful intestinal bacteria can lead to internal inflammation.

 

▶Shingles= Shingles is a common condition that occurs when your immune system is weakened. Shingles occurs when the chickenpox virus, which infects the body in childhood and remains dormant, reactivates, causing blisters, a rash, and muscle pain. The chickenpox virus can remain dormant for decades without symptoms, but can suddenly reactivate when your immune system is weakened. If you experience blisters, red spots, or pain, you should suspect shingles. Treatment with antiviral medications or other medications within 72 hours is essential for optimal recovery.

 

▶Vaginitis= In women, a weakened immune system can also cause vaginitis. The vagina naturally harbors a large number of bacteria, most of which are beneficial, maintaining a slightly acidic environment and helping to fight off pathogens. This usually presents no problems. However, when the body's immune system is weakened, beneficial bacteria decline and harmful bacteria like fungi and Trichomonas multiply, leading to vaginitis. This can cause vulvar itching, increased vaginal discharge odor, and a change in color.

 

 

◇Getting enough sleep and taking vitamin B and beta-carotene will help.

 

When abnormal signs appear in the body, efforts must be made to restore a weakened immune system. Adequate sleep is crucial for boosting immunity. Getting seven to eight hours of sleep enhances the attack power of T cells, the white blood cells that eliminate virus-infected cells, and reduces cortisol secretion, boosting immunity.


Additionally, in winter, the body expends a lot of energy to adapt to the cold, so it's important to eat nutrient-rich foods. Vitamin B boosts immunity and is effective in recovering from fatigue and generating energy.

 

Vitamin B is abundant in grains, nuts, beans, fish, eggs, dairy products, spinach, and broccoli. Eating foods rich in beta-carotene, such as pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and tangerines, is also beneficial. Adequate beta-carotene intake helps activate NK cells, a type of immune cell.

 

 

During the winter, seasonal depression and stress can negatively impact your immune system. It's a good idea to find your own stress-relieving methods, such as deep breathing, meditation, or exercise, to maintain your mental health. Exercise promotes blood circulation and activates immune cells, so even in the cold winter, it's recommended to take a walk during the day or engage in indoor activities like yoga, Pilates, or stretching. With colds and flu being prevalent, it's also important to pay attention to handwashing and hygiene.
