It is a natural phenomenon to have some eye discharge upon waking up.
The eyes blink to expel waste products such as mucus and oil, but when sleeping, they do not blink, which can lead to a buildup of waste around the eyes. However, if the color and shape of the eye discharge change, eye disease should be suspected.
The most common cause of increased eye discharge is dry eye.
When sleeping in a dry place or experiencing fatigue that reduces tear production, waste materials in the eyes are not washed away and accumulate, forming eye mucus. In cases of dry eye syndrome, clear eye mucus stretches out long. When wiping the eye mucus, it can stretch out like cheese. This is because the lack of moisture increases the viscosity of tears. In such cases, artificial tears should be administered. If symptoms are severe, gel or ointment-type artificial tears are used.
If yellow eye discharge increases, bacterial conjunctivitis or keratitis may have occurred. The discharge caused by bacteria-produced pus or inflammation causes the eye mucus and eye crust to turn yellow. If the eye mucus is transparent and drips down, it could be viral conjunctivitis. Unlike bacteria, viruses do not produce pus, so the discharge tends to be transparent. If there is a lot of opaque white eye mucus, it could be blepharitis. When blepharitis occurs, the oil glands that secrete fat from the eyes become blocked and inflamed. At this time, small white particles resembling crumbs, known as eye crust, get stuck at the opening of the oil glands.
The edge of the eyelid may become red. If the eyelid crust is yellow or opaque white, or if it is difficult to open the eyes due to crust, or if vision deteriorates because of crust, or if the eyes become red, swollen, and painful, you must see an ophthalmologist.
You can relieve symptoms with a hot pack.
If you are suffering from allergic conjunctivitis that causes itchy eyes or dry eye syndrome with redness, heat, or pain, you should apply a cold compress.
Wrap ice in a towel and apply it to the eyes. For symptoms such as blepharitis, conjunctivitis, or dry eyes without heat or pain, use warm compresses. Wet the towel with water that is not too hot and place it on the eyes 2 to 3 times a day for about 5 to 10 minutes.
