Research has shown that consuming tomatoes can help prevent and manage high blood pressure.

 

A Spanish research team analyzed 7,056 adults at high risk for cardiovascular disease. Among the participants, 82.5% were hypertensive patients. The participants completed questionnaires about their lifestyle, health status, and dietary habits, including tomato consumption. Tomato intake included fresh tomatoes, tomato sauce, gazpacho, and other tomato products. The research team classified the participants into groups based on their tomato and tomato-based food intake: ▲Low (less than 44g), ▲Moderate (44-82g), ▲Above average (82-110g), and ▲High (more than 110g).

Analysis showed that people who consumed a lot of tomatoes had a 36% lower risk of developing hypertension compared to those who consumed fewer. Even moderate daily intake of tomatoes (44-82g) had a blood pressure-lowering effect.

 

The research team analyzed that the abundant potassium in tomatoes lowers blood pressure. Reducing sodium intake and increasing potassium intake is one of the lifestyle habits that can lower the risk of hypertension. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends consuming tomatoes with high potassium content to prevent hypertension.

 

Tomatoes are a good source of lycopene in addition to potassium. Lycopene is a carotenoid compound that offers many benefits for cardiovascular health, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiplatelet effects.

 

The research team recommended including tomatoes in the diet and maintaining a balanced diet with whole grains, legumes, and healthy fats to protect heart health.

 

Consuming a variety of high-potassium foods allows you to intake vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants while meeting your potassium needs. However, people with kidney disease are at a higher risk of developing hyperkalemia and should be cautious about potassium intake. In such cases, it is necessary to consult with healthcare professionals or clinical dietitians and adjust the potassium content of the diet accordingly.
