Chronic pain lasting more than three months can be managed with diet.

A healthy diet reduces chronic pain, and this effect is more pronounced in women than in men, according to research findings.

Unlike acute pain that lasts for 3 to 7 days, pain that persists for more than 3 months is called chronic pain.

If the wound has fully healed, it is natural for the pain to disappear. However, if the pain persists, it should be considered 'pathological' rather than normal. Major causes include fractures, viral infections, and cancer. These chronic pains are estimated to affect about 30% of the global population. Although various methods are used to treat pain, many people still do not receive treatment and face difficulties.

A research team at the University of South Australia in Australia conducted a study to investigate the relationship between diet and chronic pain. From February 2008 to July 2009, a health survey was conducted in Whyalla, southern Australia, to estimate the prevalence of chronic diseases and related risk factors across generations.

This is an investigation of the diets of 654 adults who participated in the WISH study. In particular, the intake of fruits, vegetables, grains, lean meats and plant-based meats, dairy products, and alternative foods, which are designated as 'core healthy food groups' in Australian dietary guidelines, was scored to analyze the correlation with pain.

The analysis showed that the more core health food groups are consumed, the significantly greater the reduction in pain, regardless of weight or body fat. The pain reduction effect was found to be more pronounced in women than in men.

Regarding this, Dr. Susan Ward, the author of the study, said, "Women with a high-quality diet experienced lower pain levels and better physical function, but these effects were much weaker in men," suggesting that the quality of diet affects pain differently in men and women.

Dr. Lee Word said, "A healthy and nutritious diet offers various benefits for health, well-being, and pain management," and "a healthy diet can be an accessible, affordable, and effective way to manage and reduce pain."

Meanwhile, recently in the United States, WebMD introduced foods such as ginger, blueberries, pumpkin seeds, salmon, curry, and olive oil that help reduce inflammation and alleviate pain medically.
