Chronic pain lasting more than 3 months can be managed through diet.

A study found that a healthy diet can reduce chronic pain, and the effect was greater in women than in men.

Unlike acute pain that lasts 3 to 7 days, Pain that lasts more than three months is called chronic pain.

Once a wound has healed, the pain should naturally disappear. However, if the pain persists, it should be considered not normal but rather "pathological." Common causes include fractures, viral infections, and cancer. It's estimated that chronic pain affects approximately 30% of the global population. While various pain management methods are available, many people still struggle to access treatment.

A research team from the University of South Australia conducted a study to investigate the correlation between diet and chronic pain. The Whyalla Intergenerational Health Study was conducted in Whyalla, South Australia, from February 2008 to July 2009 to estimate the prevalence of chronic diseases and associated risk factors.

The study examined the diets of 654 adults participating in the WISH study. Specifically, the intake of fruits, vegetables, grains, lean meat and meat alternatives, dairy products, and alternative foods—designated "healthy core food groups" by the Australian Dietary Guidelines—was scored and analyzed for associations with pain.

Analysis results showed that consuming more of the key healthy food groups significantly reduced pain, regardless of body weight or body fat. The pain-reducing effect was found to be greater in women than in men.

“Women with better-quality diets had lower pain levels and better physical function, but this effect was much weaker in men,” said study author Dr. Susan Ward. “This suggests that diet quality affects pain differently in men and women.”

“A healthy, nutritious diet has numerous benefits for health, well-being, and pain management,” said Dr. Ward. “A healthy diet can be an accessible, affordable, and effective way to manage and reduce pain.”
