There are certain fish that are especially delicious in winter. As the weather cools, their flesh plumps up and their texture becomes even more chewy. Representative examples include squid and pufferfish. Both fish were even selected as "Fish of the Month" by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

Gwamegi is made by repeatedly freezing and thawing mackerel or saury in the cold sea breeze, then drying them. This process infuses them with a unique savory flavor and aroma. Not only is it a delicious winter delicacy, it's also nutritious. Gwamegi is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, which boost HDL cholesterol levels and promote vascular health.

 

100g of dried pollack contains approximately 7.9g of EHA, EPA, and omega-3 fatty acids, approximately 36% more than the 5.8g found in wild-caught mackerel. It also contains a high amount of vitamin E, which helps prevent aging. Garlic and seaweed, often served alongside dried pollack, also have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, creating a synergistic effect.

Pufferfish, a common gourmet food ingredient, is high in protein and low in calories. Its nutritional value is so high that Donguibogam, a Joseon Dynasty medical text, states that it "replenishes deficiencies, eliminates dampness, and treats lower back and leg ailments."

 

Pufferfish meat is rich in collagen and taurine. Collagen is a protein that plays a vital role in various parts of the body, including the skin, bones, and joints. It helps maintain skin elasticity, improve wrinkles, and improve cartilage and bone health. Taurine, an amino acid, supports energy metabolism in the body, regulates cellular water balance, and supports muscle function. It also stabilizes the nervous system, reducing stress and fatigue. Pufferfish skin is rich in selenium, a known antioxidant.

 

Pufferfish can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, such as raw fish or in pufferfish soup. However, caution is required as pufferfish contains a toxin called tetrodotoxin. Tetrodotoxin is a poison that affects the nervous system, causing muscle paralysis and respiratory difficulties. If pufferfish toxin enters the body, it can initially cause headaches and dizziness, followed by numbness in the fingertips and lips. In severe cases, death can occur within 24 hours. Therefore, if you experience any unusual symptoms after eating pufferfish, immediately seek medical attention.

    땅콩버터에 불포화지방산이 들어있어 건강에 좋다는 말에 많이 먹으면 살찌고;; 그래서 매일 소량씩 챙겨 먹고 있었는데, 과메기에도 불포화지방산이 많았네요! 혈관 건강에 이롭고 노화도 막아준다니 겨울철 가족 외식음식으로 선택해서 건강 챙겨봐야 할 것 같네요. 땅콩버터보다 살도 덜... 찌겠죠? ㅎㅎ
