Research results showed that people with higher physical fitness levels had a 41-53% lower risk of early death compared to those with lower fitness levels, regardless of the cause.
For each 1 MET (metabolic equivalent of task) increase in physical fitness, the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and acute heart conditions decreased by 7% to 51%.
Higher physical fitness is also associated with a 37-69% reduction in the risk of developing chronic diseases such as hypertension, heart failure, stroke, atrial fibrillation, dementia, and depression.
He said, "Engaging in vigorous exercise that makes you gasp for breath can reduce the risk of early death and future disease onset," and "Even slight improvements in fitness can provide significant health benefits, especially for those starting from a low baseline."
