After eating, you may feel tired and want to lie down. While this may help relieve temporary fatigue, it can have negative effects on your overall health, so caution is advised. Let's explore the health effects of lying down after a meal.

 

◇The habit of lying down after eating can cause reflux esophagitis and constipation.

 

Lying down immediately after eating can cause reflux esophagitis. The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is located between the esophagus and the stomach. This sphincter tightens to prevent stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus. It opens temporarily when you eat or burp. Lying down immediately after a meal temporarily reduces the pressure in the LES, impairing its function. This causes food and stomach acid to reflux into the esophagus, causing inflammation and esophageal reflux esophagitis.

The habit of lying down after eating can also lead to constipation. Lying down immediately after a meal reduces the motility of digestive organs like the stomach and duodenum. This is because gravity delays the emptying of food from the stomach. Lying down immediately after a meal can be particularly detrimental, as it can lead to weight gain. While sleeping, the digestive system is inactive, and basic calorie burning is halted. Even if leftover food is slowly digested in the stomach, it tends to accumulate as fat.

 

◇Lie down after at least two hours

 

It's best not to lie down within two hours of eating. It takes about two hours for food to travel from the stomach to the small intestine. Lying down during this time delays food transit time and can lead to excessive stomach acid production, which can lead to food reflux. It's best to sit or stand for at least two hours after eating. If lying down is unavoidable, wait at least 30 minutes and elevate your upper body at an angle of at least 15 degrees. It's also recommended to allow a sufficient gap of about three hours between meals and bedtime to avoid going to bed immediately after eating.

 

Meanwhile, drinking coffee after a meal is also detrimental to your health. This is because it depletes the beneficial nutrients you've worked so hard to consume. For example, the caffeine in coffee interferes with iron absorption. When iron and the tannins in coffee combine, tannin iron is formed, reducing iron absorption by up to half.
