A study has shown that even people who exercise regularly are at a higher risk of death from heart failure and cardiovascular disease if they sit for more than 10 hours a day.
The team led by Dr. Shaan Kursid at Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States measured physical activity levels over a week using wrist-worn devices on 89,530 adults with an average age of 62 registered in the UK Biobank. They then tracked the occurrence of atrial fibrillation, heart failure, myocardial infarction, and cardiovascular disease-related deaths over eight years. The average sitting time among participants was 9.4 hours. During the study period, 3,638 individuals (4.9%) were diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, 1,854 (2.1%) with heart failure, 1,610 (1.84%) with myocardial infarction, and 846 (0.94%) died due to cardiovascular disease.
According to the research findings, sitting for up to 10.6 hours a day had a minimal increase in the risk of death from heart failure and cardiovascular disease, but the risk increased significantly beyond 10.6 hours. Additionally, for people who engage in moderate to vigorous exercise for more than 150 minutes a week, sitting time had less impact on the risk of atrial fibrillation and myocardial infarction, but
The impact on the risk of death from heart failure and cardiovascular disease remains significant. Compared to the group that spends 8.2 to 9.4 hours sitting per day, the group that sits for more than 10.6 hours has a 45% and 62% higher risk of death from heart failure and cardiovascular disease, respectively. The risks of atrial fibrillation and myocardial infarction also increased by 11% and 15%, respectively. The research team explained that 10.6 hours of sitting per day is a potential threshold associated with increased mortality from heart failure and cardiovascular disease.
Research author Dr. Shaan Kurseed stated, "Not sitting for more than 10.6 hours a day could be a realistic minimum goal for improving heart health," and emphasized, "The importance of reducing sitting time should be further highlighted in the future."

In the past at my workplace
While working with numbers,
I often sat still for long periods.
Sitting for a long time definitely seems to be bad for your back.
