I have also been taking a supplement containing L-theanine and magnesium for a few weeks to help relieve tension caused by stress.

Reasons why magnesium is needed

Neurotransmitter transmission control
Magnesium is merely an ion within cells, but when exposed to stress, it becomes a protective mechanism and moves to the extracellular compartment. In other words, it suppresses excitatory neurotransmitters that contribute to stress. For example, glutamate is an excitatory neurotransmitter that affects cognition, memory, and mood. When magnesium is deficient, this excitatory signal is transmitted, leading to stress and anxiety.

 

Promotion of GABA activity
Inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA blocks signals in the central nervous system, slowing down the brain and providing a calming effect. It is said to give us a sense of relief when we are anxious. Magnesium also promotes this GABA activity.

 

 

Muscle tension regulation
One of the most well-known functions of magnesium is its ability to relax muscles. When you feel anxious, your muscles tend to tense up, and a deficiency in magnesium can not only cause muscle tension but also lead to cramps, which can further worsen anxiety symptoms.

 

 

Magnesium cannot be fully obtained through a simple diet alone, so those experiencing anxiety symptoms should consider using supplements. The generally accepted recommended daily intake of magnesium is 310mg for women aged 19-30. Although it varies by product, capsules or tablets typically contain about 100-150mg of magnesium, so taking about two pills a day is appropriate. There are various forms of magnesium supplements, and magnesium chloride, citrate, and orotate are said to be particularly effective for anxiety symptoms, so please keep this in mind. At the same time, be cautious because some forms of magnesium may cause side effects, so it is advisable to consult with a doctor before reducing the dosage or switching products.
