"I only drank lattes every day, what should I do?"…Women who consume a lot of milk face increased risk of 'this disease'
|
A study has found that women who drink more than 300 ml of unfermented regular milk daily may have an increased risk of developing ischemic heart disease (IHD), which can cause heart attacks. The risk increased with the amount consumed, and fermented dairy products like yogurt were not associated with IHD development.
Ischemic heart disease refers to a group of conditions characterized by blockage or narrowing of the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart, leading to damage of the heart muscle. Myocardial infarction is a typical example. Meanwhile, in men, there was no association between non-fermented milk consumption and increased risk of IHD.
Recently, medical researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden published these findings in the journal 'BMC Medicine.' The research team conducted a 31-year follow-up study from 1987 to 2021 on 59,989 Swedish women with an average age of 54 and 47,777 Swedish men with an average age of 60. At the start of the study, none of them had IHD or cancer, and they reported their intake of regular milk and fermented milk.
Researchers investigated the relationship between the intake of fermented or non-fermented dairy products and the occurrence of ischemic heart disease (IHD) and myocardial infarction (MI) using Cox proportional hazards regression analysis adjusted for multiple variables. During the study period, a total of 17,896 cases of ischemic heart disease (IHD) and 1,714 cases of acute myocardial infarction (MI) occurred.
For women, the minimum intake of non-fermented milk associated with an increased risk of IHD was 300 ml per day. At 400 ml, the risk increased by 5%, at 600 ml by 12%, and at 800 ml by 21%. Additionally, replacing 200 ml of non-fermented milk with fermented milk reduced the risk of IHD by 5% and the risk of MI by 4%.
Researchers believe that lactose, the sugar found in milk, can cause inflammation in the body's cells over time, potentially adding extra strain to the heart. They also explained that this risk may only affect women because women are known to digest lactose better than men.
Professor Carl Mihailson of Uppsala University School of Medicine, the lead author of the study, explained, "Consuming more than 300 ml of milk per day was associated with an increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases in women, particularly myocardial infarction. This was not observed in men. The risk increase was independent of fat content. Replacing non-fermented milk with moderately fermented milk can reduce the risk."
However, the research team stated, "Since the participants are mainly composed of Scandinavians, there may be limitations in generalizing to populations with different genetics and dairy consumption cultures." They also added, "Because this is an observational study, we cannot directly establish a causal relationship between non-fermented milk intake and IHD."

I also really like lattes.
Days when I drink a lot of coffee
I even have another cup of latte.
Fermented milk?
This seems to be important.
