A study found that reducing sugar and processed meat intake could help people live three to 10 years longer.
In the UK, an estimated 75,000 people die prematurely each year due to unhealthy diets. Reducing mortality through dietary choices is considered essential to achieving the UK's target of reducing premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by 30% by 2030. To achieve this, Public Health England (PHE) recommends following the recommended diet in the Eatwell Guide.
The EatWell Guide recommends limiting red and processed meat intake to less than 70 grams per day. Instead, it recommends consuming alternative protein sources like beans and fish. In short, it recommends a plant-based diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, while avoiding foods high in fat, salt, and sugar.
A joint research team from the University of Glasgow, Newcastle University in the UK, and the University of Bergen in Norway conducted a study to determine how dietary changes could increase life expectancy across different age groups. They hypothesized that adherence to the EatWell Guide would extend life expectancy at various stages of life. They then categorized 467,354 participants enrolled in the UK Biobank into five groups based on their adherence to the EatWell Guide, and then tracked their life expectancy.
As a result, it was found that those in their 40s could extend their life expectancy by an average of three years by improving their eating habits to best adhere to the EatWell Guide. Those in the group that was least compliant with the EatWell Guide could live approximately ten years longer by improving their eating habits to best adhere to it.
The life-extending effects of improved eating habits persisted even at older ages. It was found that those in their 70s, who were the least likely to adhere to the EatWell Guidelines, improved their eating habits to achieve the best results, increasing their average lifespan by three to four years.
“The biggest boost to life expectancy appears to be a diet low in sugary drinks and processed meats, and high in whole grains and nuts,” said study author Professor Lars Pardnes. “Exercise and supplementing with nutrients are important, but eating a nutritious diet is just as important.”
