Superfood 'Chickpeas'... There are even people for whom it is actually dangerous

Superfood 'Chickpeas'... Some People Might Find Them Actually Dangerous

Story of Reporter Lee Hae-rim

Chickpeas are rich in calcium and magnesium, making them known as a 'superfood.' They are also low in calories, making them good to eat during a diet. However, even with health foods, there are precautions to take when consuming them.

According to a research team at King's College London in the UK, people who ate foods containing chickpea flour had blood sugar responses that were 40% lower than those who ate regular bread. It also has higher levels of calcium, protein, and dietary fiber compared to other legumes. In particular, the calcium content is 45mg per 100g, about twice as much as peas. Regular consumption can contribute to bone health. Since it is rich in dietary fiber, even a small amount can quickly induce a feeling of fullness, and it is also low in calories.

However, when consuming chickpeas, it is advisable not to exceed the daily recommended intake of 300 grams. Since it is a food rich in dietary fiber, excessive consumption can cause abdominal bloating. Dietary fiber is not fully digested in the stomach and moves to the intestines, where it ferments with intestinal bacteria, producing gas in the process. Additionally, chickpeas contain a compound called oxalic acid. Oxalic acid binds with calcium, hindering calcium absorption in the body. When it binds with calcium, it can form calcium oxalate, which may accumulate in the kidneys and lead to kidney stones.

If you are taking beta-blockers for hypertension or angina, you should avoid consuming chickpeas. People taking beta-blockers may experience hyperkalemia, an excessive increase in blood potassium levels, due to medication side effects, because chickpeas are rich in potassium.

Gout patients should also be cautious with chickpeas. Gout is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated uric acid levels in the body, leading to joint problems. Chickpeas are rich in purines, which are broken down into uric acid in the body, so consuming them excessively can trigger or worsen gout.
