Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection spreading... Bucheon City shares prevention guidelines

These days, Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection is reportedly widespread across the country.

When I went to the hospital because my symptoms were similar to a cold, I was told it could be Mycoplasma.

It is said that transmission is possible up to 20 days after the onset of symptoms.

Please follow the prevention guidelines carefully.

Children with weak immune systems need to be extra careful when participating in group activities.

Recently, in Bucheon City, Gyeonggi Province, the number of infection cases has been increasing, and adherence to prevention guidelines for Mycoplasma pneumonia infection has been urged.

According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government on the 23rd, the outbreak has continued since mid-August when the weekly number of hospitalized patients nationwide exceeded 1,000. As of the 12th, the number of patients hospitalized due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection this year reached 20,069.

This is approximately ten times the number of cumulative hospitalized patients (2,075 people) that occurred during the same period last year, and it is showing a rapid spread especially among children and adolescents.

Mycoplasma pneumonia infection is an acute respiratory infection caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, which can occur throughout the year but mainly spreads from late autumn to early spring.

If infected with Mycoplasma pneumoniae, initial symptoms include fever, headache, and sore throat, with a cough lasting more than two weeks. These symptoms are similar to those of a common cold and usually resolve naturally, but if it progresses to a severe form, it can cause pneumonia and other complications.

Infections can occur through droplet transmission of respiratory secretions such as coughs or runny noses, or through direct contact, and transmission can easily occur within group facilities such as daycare centers, kindergartens, schools, or among family members.

Additionally, since transmission is possible until 20 days after symptom onset, it is important to adhere to preventive measures.

The main prevention guidelines for respiratory infectious diseases include: △Washing hands with soap under running water for at least 30 seconds △Covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing △Not touching eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands △Seeking medical care and resting when experiencing respiratory symptoms △Avoiding crowded places while symptoms persist △Using separate towels, water cups, etc., for patients △Wearing a mask and refraining from going to school or work if experiencing respiratory symptoms.

A respiratory disease official stated, "Since respiratory infections spread easily, it is important to follow preventive measures," and "If symptoms are suspected, seek treatment at the nearest medical facility and take sufficient rest."
