The number of hospitalized patients has increased by 350%... Amid the sudden cold weather, 'this disease' is spreading rapidly in Korea
Mycoplasma pneumonia is said to be a major outbreak this year.
It is said to have increased by 350% compared to last year.
At first, it was similar to a cold, so I heard there were many symptoms like coughing.
It is characterized by worsening cough and fever as time passes, and the fever often rises to 38-40 degrees Celsius.
Since it can lead to severe pneumonia, early treatment is important, so I need to watch for symptoms carefully.
Since the weather is cold, there are many patients at the hospital these days..
There are many people around me who are also unwell.
There is another forecast of rain starting from Tuesday.
Stay healthy on cold days~
A sudden drop in temperature has led to a significant outbreak of a new respiratory infection. While COVID-19 and influenza, which were widespread last year, have subsided, Mycoplasma pneumonia is experiencing an unprecedented surge this year.
Mycoplasma pneumonia is an acute respiratory infection caused by infection with Mycoplasma pneumoniae bacteria. It is easily transmitted in crowded places such as schools and workplaces through respiratory droplets and direct contact.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the number of patients hospitalized with Mycoplasma pneumoniae this year is 20,069, a 350% increase compared to last year. Compared to 1,591 hospitalized patients in 2022, this is more than 12.6 times higher. In particular, as the weather gets colder, the number of patients is increasing rapidly. From the 7th to the 13th of this month, the number of hospitalized patients in the past week alone reached as many as 1,100.
When infected with Mycoplasma pneumoniae, symptoms such as high fever, chest pain, cough, rough breathing sounds, and sore throat appear after an incubation period of 2 to 3 weeks. Initially, it is similar to a cold, but over time, cough and fever tend to worsen, often reaching 38 to 40 degrees Celsius. Symptoms can last up to six weeks, and in addition to cough and general weakness, skin conditions, arthritis, and encephalitis may also occur.
Unlike other types of pneumonia, symptoms develop gradually, and in the early stages of pneumonia, headache, fatigue, and low-grade fever may appear, or chest pain may occur due to severe coughing. Sore throat, runny nose, and ear pain are also common symptoms of Mycoplasma pneumonia.
Especially, 10-15% of patients with Mycoplasma pneumonia can progress to severe pneumonia, making early treatment important. High-risk groups such as children, those with underlying conditions, and seniors over 65 are more likely to experience worsening symptoms or complications due to co-infection with other viruses, so caution is necessary.
If infected, treatment should be with macrolide or quinolone antibiotics, and the average treatment duration is about 7 to 14 days. In most cases, treatment with oral antibiotics alone is sufficient, but if treatment is delayed, it can progress to severe pneumonia requiring intensive care.
Mycoplasma pneumonia has no preventive vaccine. However, receiving the pneumococcal and influenza vaccines can help prevent co-infection. Additionally, following respiratory infection prevention guidelines such as hand washing, wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, and maintaining healthy lifestyle habits like regular meals and sleep is recommended.
