A study has shown that the 'Anti-Diet' method, which pursues sustainable eating habits, is effective in reducing weight and waist circumference.

Anti-diet is a weight loss method based on high-fiber foods, characterized by the absence of calorie counting or restrictive foods. However, the diet includes rich fiber sources such as ▲fatty fish ▲whole grains ▲nuts ▲seeds and legumes.

A research team at King's College London in the UK compared and analyzed 347 obese adults with an average body mass index (BMI) of 34. Participants were divided into an anti-diet intervention group and a control group (adhering to a standard diet appropriate for normal weight) over 18 weeks. The research team measured participants' blood lipids, blood sugar levels, and gut microbiome levels.


According to the analysis, individuals practicing anti-dieting experienced an average reduction of 6.3cm in waist circumference and lost an average of 2.17kg in weight. The control group saw an average decrease of 5.35cm in waist circumference and a weight loss of 0.3kg. Blood cholesterol levels also decreased approximately 0.3mmol/L more in the anti-diet group compared to the control group. Participants in the anti-diet group felt less hungry and had higher sleep quality than the control group.

 

The research team analyzed that nutrients such as beta-glucan obtained from high-fiber foods contributed to the effectiveness of the diet while practicing anti-diet.

 

Beta-glucan, a soluble fiber, helps eliminate waste from the intestines and provides a feeling of fullness for a longer period. By removing waste, it also helps maintain a healthy balance of gut microbiota.

 

Professor Specter, who led the research team, said, "Some diet plans excessively restrict calories or recommend low-fat foods, making adherence difficult and long-term weight loss effects hard to achieve." He added, "Anti-diets are easier for people to follow, effective in improving health, and help reduce feelings of hunger."
