"Same old greens and rice when we meet"… Bad eating habits that harm health

Eating the same food every day also falls under bad eating habits. Unless it is a very special dish, continuously eating the same thing is likely to cause boredom. It can reduce appetite and harm health. Nutrition experts cite bad eating habits such as grilling too much meat, using too much or too little oil, or cooking various dishes with the same type of oil. The American health portal 'Thehealthy' introduced the '10 bad eating habits identified by nutrition experts.'

Always cooking the same food

Eating the same food all the time is not beneficial for physical and mental health. Try new foods or cooking methods. You can't know if a food suits your taste unless you try it yourself. It's not a good eating habit to dismiss a food outright without trying it or experimenting with different preparation methods. If you dislike raw carrots, you can bake them with olive oil and fresh herbs. Challenging yourself with new foods and recipes can broaden your palate and add a variety of nutrients to your diet.

Thawing frozen food

Frozen foods should not be thawed at room temperature. Once thawed, bacteria can grow rapidly, significantly increasing the risk of food poisoning. It is safe to thaw frozen foods using a microwave or by slowly thawing in the refrigerator. Thawing frozen foods under running cold water is also a good method.

Cooking various dishes with the same oil

It is important to balance the use of fats and oils. Especially when cooking at high temperatures, attention should be paid to the type of oil used. Olive oil produces smoke at relatively low temperatures. When oil smokes, the taste deteriorates and some nutrients are lost. To prevent food from burning, it is better to use safflower oil or avocado oil when cooking at high temperatures.

Cooking with too much or too little fat

Eating too much oil or healthy fats (unsaturated fats) is also not good because it only increases calorie intake without providing beneficial nutrients. On the other hand, eating too little means you cannot expect health benefits. Chris Solid, a certified nutritionist and Senior Director of Nutrition Communication at the International Food Information Council Foundation, said, "Not using oil in moderation can harm your health." A small amount of oil is good for flavor, but may not be very healthy. Olive oil, canola oil, and soybean oil are excellent sources of healthy fats, but they are also high in calories. Of course, there is no need to avoid all oils completely in an extreme way. Fats are essential nutrients that help absorb fat-soluble vitamins.

Adding salt without tasting the food

Put down the salt shaker and pick up a spoon to taste the food first. Do not blindly add salt before tasting the food. Salt is a great seasoning, but some dishes require very little or no salt at all. It is advisable to adjust the amount of salt according to professional chefs' advice to control sodium intake.

Avoid sweets because of sugar

Avoiding fruits because they contain too much sugar (carbohydrates) is not a very good habit. Unlike refined and processed sugars, fruits contain fiber. Fructose, a type of sugar found in fruits, helps slow down the rate at which food is absorbed into the bloodstream. Fiber is also beneficial for beneficial bacteria in the gut. It improves gut health and helps you feel full longer. It helps reduce calorie intake and manage weight. Nutritionally, fruits have more advantages than disadvantages. Except for diabetics or those warned by doctors to be cautious about fruit consumption, it is good to consume fruits sufficiently.

Cooking with only egg whites

If only egg whites are used in cooking without the whole egg (whole egg), many nutrients are lost. Some people eat only egg whites to reduce calorie intake. While egg whites are an excellent source of protein, they are not healthier than whole eggs. Eating the yolk can help maintain a feeling of fullness for a longer period.

Cooking everything gluten-free

People with celiac disease or gluten allergies must restrict or eliminate gluten from their diet. Malina Malkani, a registered dietitian in New York and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, said, "There is no clear evidence that a gluten-free lifestyle is beneficial for health or aids in weight loss." A gluten-free diet can be healthy and complete. However, grains containing gluten are rich in trace nutrients. Unnecessarily removing gluten can make it difficult to consume enough fiber, vitamins, and minerals necessary for bodily growth.

Throwing away food due to expiration date

Throwing away food because of expiration dates is wasteful. It is also harmful to the environment. Just follow the 'use-by date' that tells you when to eat the food. Products past this date should be discarded.

Overcooking the meat too much

Lisa Richard, a certified nutritionist and founder of the American nutrition website 'TheCandidaDiet.com,' said, "Always grilling or cooking meat until it is well done can do more harm than good." She warned, "Overcooking meat can produce compounds that increase oxidative stress and inflammation, and may also raise the risk of certain cancers." Grilling a small amount of meat over charcoal is okay. However, it is important to remember that grilling meat over charcoal can produce toxins in food. Stewing, roasting, and slow-cooked meats are much healthier options than grilled foods.
