Allulose, responsible for sweetness during dieting... Is it okay to eat a lot?

Story of Reporter Lim Min-young

Some people use allulose to reduce sugar intake while dieting. Allulose is a type of alternative sweetener, and it is often added when eating Greek yogurt or lattes. However, is it okay for health to reduce sugar and frequently consume allulose?

Allulose is a rare natural sugar found in raisins, wheat, and other foods.

The sweetness level is about 70% of sugar, and over 98% is not absorbed by the body and is excreted.

Most of the ingested allulose is absorbed in the small intestine and excreted in the urine because most gut microorganisms cannot utilize it. Its caloric value is relatively low, at 0.2 to 0.3 kcal per gram. For this reason, allulose is popular among people on a diet.

In fact, allulose suppresses blood sugar elevation, and

There are research findings that suggest inhibiting lipid absorption can aid in dieting.

However, there is still a possibility of experiencing side effects depending on the individual. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that excessive consumption of allulose may temporarily cause abdominal discomfort.

A domestic research team conducted an experiment observing whether side effects appeared as participants gradually increased the amount of allulose they consumed. They found that side effects were observed in some individuals starting from when they began consuming 0.5g/kg (0.5 grams of allulose per kilogram of body weight). The symptoms of side effects include diarrhea, abdominal bloating, abdominal pain, and stomach rumbling.

Furthermore, whenever you want to taste sweetness, using allulose can lead to the fundamental problem of being unable to break free from sugar addiction.

Even if the sweetening component is not absorbed by our body, when the tongue perceives sweetness, the brain areas related to taste become activated.

The reward system that causes pleasure and addiction begins to activate. If artificial sweeteners are consumed in large amounts over a long period, eventually ordinary sweetness may no longer satisfy, leading to increased consumption of sweet foods. Since sweetness is perceived more intensely when accompanied by saltiness, there is also a risk of increased sodium intake.

If you really want to consume allulose, it is best to limit your intake to no more than 0.4 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. The best approach is to practice eating habits that minimize sweetness as much as possible, regardless of the method.

===================

These days, alcohols are more popular than sugar.

It comes out for use with food and syrup.

Can't ignore the addiction to sweetness...

Still, it is important to prevent it as much as possible from becoming too sweet.
