Protein Bars Claimed to Build Muscle: 3 Health Problems Caused by Excessive Eating
Office worker A often eats protein bars as meal replacements to build muscle mass. However, consistently replacing meals with protein bars can lead to excessive protein intake. This can even lead to health problems. We explored the diseases that can be caused by excessive protein intake.
◇Constipation
Excessive protein intake can cause constipation. When protein is broken down, ammonia is produced. Ammonia is converted to urea in the liver and excreted in the urine. Consuming too much protein increases the amount of protein excreted, drawing water from the body to be used elsewhere. This water withdrawal from the colon can lead to constipation. Protein also increases satiety, reducing the intake of dietary fiber, which helps relieve constipation.
◇Kidney disease
Protein contains nitrogen, so excessive protein consumption generates a large amount of nitrogenous waste during protein breakdown. This places a strain on the kidneys, which filter out waste, and increases the risk of kidney disease. This risk is even greater if kidney disease already exists. When kidney function declines, nitrogenous compounds, organic acids, and phosphoric acids produced during protein metabolism cannot be excreted. These substances accumulate in the body and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, impaired kidney function can lead to uremia, a condition caused by the inability to excrete waste products.
◇Gout
Eating too much protein increases the risk of gout. Gout is a disease in which uric acid, a final metabolic byproduct, is not properly excreted and crystals accumulate in joint cartilage, tendons, and surrounding tissues. High-protein foods are high in purines (a type of nitrogen compound) that produce uric acid, a byproduct of the body's metabolism. Uric acid is a byproduct of purine breakdown. Gout occurs when uric acid is not properly excreted and builds up in the body. High protein intake causes uric acid to accumulate in the joints, and the immune system mistakes the uric acid crystals for foreign invaders and attacks them, causing pain.
Meanwhile, the recommended daily protein intake is 0.8 to 1 g per kg of body weight. For those building muscle or older adults with low muscle mass, the recommended daily intake can be increased to approximately 1.2 g per kg of body weight, depending on their health. To prevent diseases caused by excessive protein intake, consider the recommended intake and adjust your protein intake through protein bars.
