One group was instructed to drink 0.5L of water 30 minutes before a meal, while the other group was made to believe that their stomach was already full before eating. As a result, the group that drank water before eating lost an average of 4.30kg over 12 weeks. The group that believed they were full before eating lost an average of 0.79kg. Additionally, drinking 0.5L of water was found to increase the metabolic rate by over 30% for about 10 minutes after drinking, making it easier for the body to burn calories.

 

If you do not have digestive or stomach issues, drinking enough water 30 minutes before a meal is good for dieting. Eating an appetizer before a meal, besides water, also helps. Eating an appetizer results in consuming about 20% fewer calories than when not eating one. In particular, it is good to eat vegetable salads. Lettuce, broccoli, and other ingredients used in salads are low in calories and highly filling, making them excellent for weight loss.


◇Smell of peppermint and grapefruit scent

 

Even smelling peppermint or grapefruit before eating can reduce the amount of food intake. The sense of smell is closely connected to the brain, and the olfactory receptors transmit the detected information to the limbic system. The limbic system is a brain structure located at the boundary between the cerebral cortex and the hypothalamus, involved in emotions, memory, and hormone secretion. When the olfactory receptors are stimulated, the brain releases hormones throughout the body, sending signals to stop eating, thereby decreasing appetite. The scent of peppermint can be used as a natural appetite suppressant.

 

According to a study published in the appetite journal, people who smell peppermint every two hours experience fewer cravings for hunger compared to those who do not, resulting in an average reduction of 2,800 kcal intake over a week. The refreshing scent of peppermint helps suppress appetite and reduce calorie intake. Additionally, a Japanese study found that the scent of grapefruit increases pulse rate, blood pressure, and body temperature, and stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, which enhances blood flow and adrenaline secretion. This aids in fat breakdown.
